Windows 9, the successor to the not so successful Windows 8 may make its debut as early as September 30. The version, code-named “The Threshold” will be released as a preview to developers and computer enthusiasts. Some of the changes expected in the new version of Windows is the removal of the Charms Menu and introduction of the new mini Start menu.

Threshold is likely to be named Windows 9 but it is unlikely that that the name will be revealed at its press event, as reported The Verge. The report also stated that Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual assistant that was already a part of Windows Phone.

Windows 8 was not a huge success as many users were having difficulty in adjusting to the new User Interface and that was also one of the criticisms it faced. Charms, a feature that had the settings panel and power buttons was not of much use but was considered only as a visual effect. The biggest criticism it faced was that it was built for tablets and there was not much use of it for laptops and desktops, thus causing more harm to their sales than doing good. Microsoft came out with Windows 8.1 last year which brought back the Start menu but that was not taken well by users either because of some errors and problems with apps.

With a new UI and the return of the Start Menu, a regular Windows feature since Windows 95, Microsoft will be hoping it will please the users and app developers alike.
