The social networking site Facebook is honoured by another eminent personality of the world who recently became the member of the social networking site. World renowned theorist, cosmologist and author Stephen Hawking joined the site to reach out to people. Until now the 72-year-old was devoid of the social networking experience until Friday.
Though Hawking’s page was created in the first week of October, but the famous British physicist updated his first status on October 24. “I have always wondered what makes the universe exist. Time and space may forever be a mystery, but that has not stopped my pursuit. Our connections to one another have grown infinitely and now that I have the chance, I’m eager to share this journey with you. Be curious, I know I will forever be. Welcome, and thank you for visiting my Facebook Page,” he wrote to the world.
Like other well known personalities, Hawking also contributed in ALS ice-bucket challenge and the same has been uploaded on the site, on behalf of Hawking, his children took the plunge by taking the ice bucket challenge. Through the video, he nominated Ian Blatchford, the director of The Science Museum, Lord Sainsbury, Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He also wrote, “It wouldn’t have been very safe for me to have done the ice bucket challenge, but that is why I have three beautiful children who could take the plunge for me.”
As of now Hawking’s page has received more than a million likes. Some claim that it might be a promotional strategy as the biopic about Hawking’s life titled The Theory of Everything premieres in the coming week. The movie is based on a book by Hawking’s first wife, Jane, called “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.”
But Hawking is not a person who will stoop to such tactics just to create some buzz, rather he is a man who himself has the caliber to generate buzz on his own. In a day Hawking received lakhs of welcome messages from the people across the world as well as a like from none other than the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The page is maintained by Prof. Hawking’s team and posts from Hawking are signed as ‘SH’.
The 72-year scientist is yet to join Twitter. One cannot rule out the possibility that it might be in his near future plan. For now, ‘Welcome Stephen Hawking’.
