Pakistan vs Australia 2014, 1st Test, Day 3: 5 interesting highlights of the day’s play

Warner brought up his ninth ton despite wickets tumbling around him like nine pins.

After David Warner and Chris Rogers unbeaten century stand on day two, Pakistan fought their way back on day three by scalping wickets in quick succession. However, opener Warner recorded his ninth Test ton with wickets tumbling around him. Pakistan bowlers bowled emphatically to restrict Australia to 303 and handed their team a valuable lead of 151 runs. Pakistan, now in their second innings at close of play on day three have reached 38 for no loss, stretching the lead to 189. In case you missed the action on third day, here are the highlights from day’s play.

Pakistan strike early in the day: Chris Rogers was the first one to go for Australia after openers put on a century stand. Rogers and Warner started at Australia’s overnight score of 113, but could add only 15 runs before Rogers fell to Rahat Ali on an individual score of 38. Rogers, looking to cut, played onto the stumps and thus Pakistan got the vital breakthrough.

David Warner notches Test ton number nine: After playing a brisk knock overnight, Warner played cautiously on day three morning as he approached his ton. He played a waiting game and got to his ninth Test century and third in successive innings.

David Warner falls, so does the rest: Going at good pace Australia lost wickets on either side of the lunch and were pegged back. Alex Doolan, skipper Michael Clarke and Steven Smith all fell before the lunch and dangerous Warner lost his wicket on 133 after the lunch break. Australia were restricted to 207 for five in no time.

Australia bundled out:As soon as Warner was dismissed, Australia found themselves swimming in deep waters. Brad Haddin and Mitchell Marsh tried to stitch a partnership, but Rahat Ali, with second new ball once again provided Pakistan a breakthrough. Australia then added only 54 runs and lost last four wickets quickly. Debutant leg spinner Yasir Shah was pick of the bowlers for Pakistan as he picked 3 for66, while Zulfiqar Babar and Rahat Ali scalped two wickets each.

Pakistan openers stay unbeaten: With bad light the day’s play ended couple of overs before the scheduled time. Pakistan opened their second innings with makeshift opening pair of Ahmed Shehzad and Azhar Alias regular opener Mohammad Hafeez suffered an ankle injury. Both Shehzad and Ali responded positively to stay unbeaten on 22 and 16 respectively at stumps.
