Bali Pratipada festival is celebrated on 31st October, 2016. This auspicious day is the third day of Diwali and is celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm of the demon who returned to earth – King Bali. This special day is celebrated by each and every Hindu. Bali Pratipada is celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm of the demon who returned to earth – King Bali. There is a myth which is followed, that the image of King Bali along with his soul mate Vindhyavali must be drawn at the centre of the house with five different shades of colours. It is also said that during Bali’s regime, people used to never lock their homes and there was nothing like thieves existed.

On this auspicious day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu by offering him food and try to seek his divine blessings. The occasion starts with oil bath and aarti which is performed by the devotees. Further, they draw rangoli with powdered rice and worship King Bali. In the evening, people lit oil lamps and diyas. Brahmans are invited for meals and devotees also worship Govardhan mountain along with Lord Vishnu. According to old mythological stories, Bali Pratipada is regarded as the victory of Lord Vishnu in his Vamana and defeating King Bali. King Bali was granted a boon by Lord Vishnu that he could return to Earth just for one day and celebrated in the honor of devoting Lord and for his deeds. Devotees perform Bali Puja and seek blessings of King demon and is believed that Bali resides on Earth for three days and grants his blessings. Legend of King Bali:

King Bali was a generous and a very ambitious person. People used to like him for his prosperity, well-being and happiness nature. He was the one who never discriminated on the basis of religion, caste or sex. Bali was solely dedicated to Lord Vishnu and was considered as an arrogant and evil in nature, due to which people used to not like him. Due to his popularity the entire God’s were pretty much upset and even jealous. Soon all God’s approached to Lord Vishnu to get rid of King Bali. Finally, Lord Vishnu came to Earth in the form of dwarf Vamana, which was his fifth avatar out of the ten. Lord reached King Bali’s kingdom and as usual Bali told Lord Vishnu to ask for anything he wanted.

Lord Vishnu replied saying you are the ruler of three main worlds like Earth, so would you give me the space that I can cover with three strides? King Bali agreed to his request and Lord Vishnu placed his first step on the entire universe.  With his second step he quickly occupied earth and now the place where King Bali was standing left. There was no place left for Lord Vishnu to step, so King Bali generously offered his own head to step on. King Bali was quite brilliant and very well knew that Vamana was none other than Lord Vishnu. Lord within no time placed his foot on his head and he was soon banished to Patalaloka.

Lord Vishnu was so happy by Bali’s generosity that he granted him with a boon that he could return to Earth for just one day and spread happiness, love and wisdom. Along with a boon King Bali was also granted with the wish of becoming the next Indra. And that the reason why people lit lamps and burst noisy crackers on this day and welcome King Bali on Earth.

Rituals Performed on Bali Pratipada:

Lot of bhakts tries to please King Bali and offer food and exchange gifts with their loved ones. Once it’s done, oil bath along with scented soap is performed and new clothes are worn. As usual people draw rangoli with powdered rice and worship King Bali. In the evening, lamps are lighted and then the whole evening is spent by playing gambling games.

Shubh Muhurat of Puja:

The shubh muhurat for performing puja is within 06:42 to 08:58 and Sayankal Muhurat is between 15:45 to 18:01. Apart from the puja, lots of yummy delicacies are prepared which includes cereals like wheat, rice, curry and leafy vegetables and further distributed among loved ones. On the auspicious occasion of Bali Pratipada, we wish each and everyone of you a happy and prosperous new year!

Procedure of Puja

  1. Picture of King Bali along with his wife Vindhyavali is drawn with rangoli and decorated with five different hues. Clothes, food and other necessary items are being donated and the day starts with oil bath and aarti.
  2. In the aftermoon, Brahmans are invited for meals and on this day consumption of liquir is strictly avoided.
  3. People wear new clothes and worship Govardhan mountain. Idols of Lord Indra is kept and then worshipped.
