After winning the toss Pakistan decided to bat first on a wicket which was flat and hard. Pakistan once again had new opening combination, but both fell early to Australia’s new ball bowlers. It was Azhar Ali and Younis Khan who then steadied Pakistan innings. At the end of the day’s play Pakistan are 219-4. Mitchell Johnson was pick of the bowlers as he scalped three wickets.In case you missed the action on a fascinating opening day here are five interesting highlights to guide you through what happened at Dubai.

Pakistan openers depart early: Mohammad Hafeez was back for Pakistan in Test ranks, but he lasted only two balls to be dismissed for nought. In first over of the day Hafeez failed to make any contact with the ball as Mitchell Johnson’s perfect Yorker hit him on the foot. The batsman after been given out opted for review, but TV replays showed nothing in favour of him. Few overs later it was Peter Siddle who removed another opener Ahmed Shehzad. Siddle hit Shehzad’s leg stump after the batsman went too far across, thus exposing his stumps. In space of 19 deliveries Pakistan were left shocked at 7-2.

Younis Khan and Azhar Ali take control: After Pakistan were jolted early it was the duo of Younis Khan and Azhar Ali who put their team back on track. Both played cautiously and denied Australia further wicket.Younis and Azhar put on 108-run stand for the third wicket to bring stability to Pakistan innings before the latter was dismissed for 53.

Resilient ton by Younis Khan: Once Azhar departed, experienced campaigner Younis stayed firm to guide Pakistan. The right-handed batsman scored his 25th Test century and became the first Pakistan batsmanto score a hundred against every Test playing nation. Younis then fell to Johnson on 106.

Mitchell Johnson the star:Australia’s spearhead Mitchell Johnson was pick of the bowlers on day one as he scalpedthree wickets. Johnson removed Hafeez in the first over and then broke the valuable stand between Younis and Azhar.After taking the second new ball Johnson struck again to remove well-set Younis. He bowled 13 maidens out of his 20 overs in the day and picked 3-22.

Misbah ul Haq and Asad Shafiq stay firm: Pakistan lost the pivotal wicket of Younis with nine overs to go in the day and then Asad Shafiq and Captain Misbah ul Haq stitched a sluggish unbeaten partnership of 21 off 58 balls. At stumps on day one Pakistan are 219-4 with Misbah unbeaten on 34 and Asad on 9.
