Pakistan vs Australia 2014, 1st Test, Day 4: 5 interesting highlights of day’s play

Pakistan vs Australia 2014, 1st Test, Day 4: 5 interesting highlights of day’s play

With an overnight score of 38-0 Pakistan began their second innings on day four morning and it was the 168 run partnership between Ahmed Shehzad and Younis Khan that gave them the upper hand. Both Shehzad and Younis smashed centuries as Pakistan set Australia a target of 438 to win the Test. In response Australia were undone by the spinning duo of Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah. At close of play on day four Australia are 59-4 and still need 379 more runs to win with six wickets in hand. Here are the highlights of the day’s play in case you missed out on the action.

1) Australia pick early wicket: Only two wickets fell for Pakistan in the day and one of those fell early in shape of Azhar Ali. The right-handed batsman managed to add only 14 runs to his overnight score of 16 andwas caught behind by wicketkeeper Brad Haddin off Steve O’Keefe. The opening stand for Pakistan was worth 71 runs. 

2) Ahmed Shehzad’s ton gave Pakistan momentum: Ahmed Shehzad showed willingness to stay on wicket and played patiently, but soon he went into the aggressive mode and attacked bowlers at regular intervals. Shehzad along with Younis Khan made Australian bowlers toil hardwith former scoring his fourth Test ton.Soon after his century Shehzad looked to up the ante and add some quick runs to overall Pakistan’s lead and while doing so he perished for a solid 131.

3) Younis Khan’s record breaking century: Younis Khan started exactly from where he left in the first innings and went on to score his 2nd hundred of the match, a historic one. Younis shared 168-run stand with Shehzad for the second wicket and took Pakistan’s lead well past 400-run mark. The veteran smashed his 26th Test century and with that he became the Pakistan batsman with most centuries in Tests, surpassing former great Inzamam ul Haq.Younis remained unbeaten on 103 as Pakistan then declared their innings on 286/2, setting the Australians a target of 438.

4) Spinners shine for Pakistan: Australian openers had their task cut out to try and negotiate the 20 odd overs left in the day. Chris Rogers and David Warner started positively and denied Pakistan wicket for 13 overs with a 44-run stand, but it took Pakistan spinnersonly four overs to stamp authority on the match. Zulfiqar Babar removed Warner and Alex Doolan in same over and then debutant Yasir Shah alsoscalpedtwo wickets in one over. Yasir trapped Australian captain Michael Clarke and night-watchman Nathan Lyon lbw to leave Australia reeling at 49-4.

5) Chris Rogers and Steven Smith survive spin scare: The spinning duo of Zulfiqar and Yasir looked dangerous after scalping four quick wickets andwith wicket offering spin. Opener Rogers played a defiant innings and kept one end intact, he was joined by Steven Smith and the two made sure Australia do not lose further wickets. Rogers and Smith remained unbeaten on 23 and 3 respectively when day’s play ended. At stumps on day four Australia are 59-4 and will be playing for draw on last day of the Test.
