1. Moon (2009)

Moon is a masterpiece. Sam Rockwell plays an astronaut who has a personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY (Kevin Spacey), sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish earth’s power problems. 99% of the time there’s only one actor we see on the screen, Sam Rockwell. And he’s absolutely perfect in this film. Kevin Spacey is also really good as the voice of the machine GERTY. When Moon came out in 2009, it grossed 9 million dollars at the box office. Now, it has gained a very strong cult following. Also, listen to the great music score in this film by Clint Mansell.

2. Sunshine (2007)

Sunshine was a box office bomb when it first came out but has now gained a cult following. Sunshine is about a team of international astronauts who are sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun with a nuclear fission bomb in 2057. The film is a perfect example of how to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, especially during the last 40 minutes. The cast is superb and includes Cillain Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans and more, are at their best.

3. Bicentennial Man (1999)

Robin Williams was in a lot of forgettable films that bombed at the box office during the, but Bicentennial Man was completely different. The film is based on an Isaac Asimov short story and was directed by Chris Columbus. Williams plays a robot who acquires feelings as the years go by. Although it does have a few funny moments, it’s also a very emotional film. Many people consider the film as the most misunderstood movie of all time.

4. Mr. Nobody (2007)

Belgian director Jaco Von Dormael made this mind bending film that stars Jared Leto as Nemo Nobody, a man who knows about the infinite possibilities. This brilliant film with a budget of 46 million USD grossed a total of 2 million USD, but has risen to the status of a cult filmafter becoming very popular on Netflix.

5. Strange Days (1995)

A sci-fi directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), written by James Cameron and fueled by a cyber punk society, rock and roll, and addictions is one hell of a combination. The film follows Ralph Fiennes as he peddles people’s memories as first hand experiences. This lands him into serious trouble when he begins picking up the memories of a serial killer. The film has almost been forgotten and is hardly seen due to a very limited theatrical release that saw this film flop hard. But Strange Days has to be one of most under-rated sci-fi films of all time. Image Credit: Facebook
