Maria Sharapova beat Serena Williams in Wimbledon 2004 Final

This match marked the arrival of Maria Sharapova in the tennis circuit, making her a household name all round the world. Young Maria at the age of 17 defeated  two times defending champion Serena Williams in what was touted as the ‘the most stunning upset in memory’ by media. She posted a 6–1, 6–4 win over Serena Williams in the lopsided final of Wimbledon 2004.

Maria Sharapova beat Justine Henin-Hardenne in US Open 2006 Final

People started doubting her chances of winning grand slam post her Wimbledon victory. And Maria Sharapova came back strongly to claim her second major title at US Open 2006. She defeated the second seeded Henin-Hardenne comprehensively in the finals 6-4, 6-4. In the same tournament she defeated the top seed Amelie Mauresmo in the semi-finals.

Maria Sharapova beat Camille Pin in Australian Open 2007 First Round

Not a big name as Maria’s competitor but Camille Pin proved a tough task for Maria Sharapova playing at Australian Open 2007 in the first round. Top seed Maria Sharapova not only battled the Pin’s determined game plan but stomach problem and inhuman heat. Maria hung on to defeat Camille Pin 6-3, 4-6, 9-7 after the hard-fought battle at Rod Laver Arena.

Maria Sharapova beat Ana Ivanovic in Australian Open 2008 Final

Seeded fifth at the Australian Open, Maria Sharapova made to her consecutive finals in 2008 facing Ana Ivanovic from Serbia for the title. Maria defeated Ana ivanovic comfortably in two sets towin her third major of her career. She won the match 7-5, 6-3 against the Serb.

Maria Sharapova beat Caroline Wozniacki in Miami 2012 Semi-finals

Maria Sharapova ended Caroline Wozniacki run to Miami Finals with a superb 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win. The match ended on a heated note with the Dane refusing to shake hands with the umpire for ruling a point in favour of Sharapova. Wozniakci won the first set 6-4 but could not keep up the momentum eventually losing to Sharapova.

Maria Sharapova beat Simona Halep in Madrid Open 2014 Final

Coming into the final of Madrid Open, Maria Sharapova held a record of 47-3 on the clay court, but the final against Romanian Simona Halep started on a wrong note as Simona took the first set 1-6. Sharapova made a great comeback to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3. She won two titles on her way to Roland Garros 2014.

Maria Sharapova beat Garbine Muguruza in French Open 2014 Quarter-finals

She had a narrow escape from being knocked out of the tournament against a firing Garbine Muguruza from Spain. The Spanish player already became a sensation after she defeated Serena Williams in the second round. She did not look a bit nervous playing against Maria with easily taking the first set in 27 minutes 6-1. She went on to lead 4-3 in the second set before Maria started to send more of returns and won the match 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Maria Sharapova is next playing Eugenie Bouchard from Canada in her semi-finals match at Roland Garros.
