ISL 2014 Final, Kerala Blasters FC vs Atletico de Kolkata: Three Key Battles

Atk-vs-Kerala

Kerala Blasters FC and Atletico de Kolkata will fight for the coveted silverware in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League (ISL). During their meeting in the round-robin clashes, Antonio Habas’ side failed to win either matches, although they can claim that a refereeing decision denied them a point at the return leg in Kochi. Here are three key battles that could dictate the outcome of this clash. Click here to read the preview and here to find out the live streaming details of the final.

Iain Hume vs Arnab Mondal/Josemi

The KBFC striker has been one of the most consistent players throughout the tournament. His hardwork and overall play is the main reason why David James’ side managed to secure a place in the final. The former Canadian international has five goals to his name apart from nicking three assists. Arnab Mondal and Josemi have failed to stop Hume in both fixtures and once again the 31-year-old’s battle with the Atletico centre-back pair will prove to be the game changer.

Stephen Pearson vs Borja Fernandes

Matches are won or lost depending on the effectiveness of the midfielders and their ability to dictate or break up the opposition’s play. Paired alongside Ofentse Nato, Borja has a task of arresting the Blasters’ midfield that is led by Pearson. The Scot is the reason why the Kochi outfit are in contention to lift the trophy; courtesy of his individual brilliance against Chennaiyin FC in the second-leg.

Pearson does not boast any assist and nothing more than one goal to his tally this season. But his contribution from set-piece and the danger he provides with his precision passing will be something Atletico need to be wary of if they intend to become the first champion.

Cedric Hengbart/Colin Falvey vs Luis Garcia/Jakub Podany

Not a lot is known about what side Antonio Habas will field given that he doesn’t have the services of Fikru. Mohammed Rafi has failed to prove his worth despite getting nine chances. The onus will be on Jakub Podany or Luis Garcia to conjure the goals and Kerala Blasters FC’s centre-back pairing will have to find a way to arrest these attacking forces and help their team maintain a clean sheet.
