Frank Lampard scored against Manchester City. It must be ironical that he opened his account at Manchester City against his former club Chelsea, where he is revered as a legend. He has scored over 200 goals in a Chelsea career spanning 13 seasons. After scoring 7 goals against Manchester City in a Chelsea shirt Lampard was back in the clash as he scored against Chelsea in a Manchester City shirt. The goal was even more tragic considering that it was the equaliser and stopped Chelsea from earning a hard-fought win away at Etihad stadium.
Did Chelsea do the wise thing by letting Lampard leave? The jury is divided over it but here are 3 reasons why Chelsea should buy-back Frank Lampard.
1. He will mentor the younger players
Chelsea has a plethora of younger players. Mohammed Salah, Nemanja Matic, Oscar, Willian, Eden Hazard can all benefit from Lampard’s experience. There are no senior midfielders in Chelsea’s squad. Cesc Fabregas is there but there is no doubt that Frank Lampard has a greater experience with English football than Fabregas.
2. He will provide defensive stability as a CDM
Chelsea have been conceding too many goals this season. One of the bigger reasons is that in trying to improve their offense they have focused less on their defense. A big culprit is the Holding midfield position where Fabregas has been great as a passer of the ball but has been lazy when it comes to winning it back when the ball is under opposition position. There is very little doubt that as a defensive midfielder, Lampard is much better than Fabregas. Plus he has much greater knowledge of the team and how it works than Fabregas does, even while taking Fabregas’ recent exploits into account. Fabregas would be good just behind the striker.
3. He could be the future manager at Chelsea
Mourinho had said that Lampard could succeed him as Chelsea manager and that the latter went on a small break when he left Chelsea. If Chelsea buy back Lampard he will be a Chelsea player when he retires and will know better about what has changed at Chelsea. Chelsea is undergoing a generational shift in terms of style and personnel. In an event where Lampard becomes the manger he will certainly know better the changes that will have taken place at Chelsea. Manchester United have done that with Ryan Giggs as assistant manager. Chelsea can do the same and probably more successfully.
