Since the start of 17th Asian Games at Incheon, all eyes were on Indian players, who made the entire country proud by bringing home 15 gold medals from the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow few months ago. India were hoping that these star sports-persons will take motivation and emulate their feat at the Asiad as well. But as it is said, ‘expectation is the root cause of all disappointments in life’, some of them failed to live up to the expectations and could not put up a consistent show to repeat their heroics. Here we take a look at the players who failed to weave their magic in South Korea, after having bagged the yellow metal at the CWG.

Amit Kumar (Wrestling):  In the final of men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling at the CWG, Amit had defeated Nigerian Ebikweminomo Welson 3-1 to clinch gold. But at the Asiad, the grappler was knocked down 1-3 by his Japanese opponent Fumitaka Morishita in the Round of 16 match. Much was expected from Amit Kumar, but he failed to deliver this time round.

Babita Kumari (Wrestling): At the CWG in women’s wrestling 55 kg freestyle, Babita Kumari had clinched gold by defeating Brittanee Laverdure 9-2 in the finals. At the Asian Games Babita made it to semi-finals, but lost to Japanese Saori Yoshida 4-0 and then for bronze medal bout she lost 1-3 against China’s Xuechun Zhong.

Rahi Sarnobat (Shooting): In an all-Indian final of women’s shooting 25 m Pistol event at the CWG Rahi Sarnobat defeated her compatriot Anisa Sayyed to bag gold medal, but at the Asian Games she failed to make it to top 4 and finished seventh in the semi-final out of eight competitors.

Apurvi Chandela (Shooting): We had witnessed another all-Indian final at the CWG shooting event, Apurvi Chandela walked away with honours against Ayonika Paul to claim top sport in the podium of the women’s 10 m Air Rifle, thus claiming her first international medal. At the Asiad, Apurvi finished 13th in 10m Air Rifle women’s qualification and could not make it to finals. Incidentally, it was her CWG opponent and compatriot Ayonika Paul who made it to finals only to finish a disappointing seventh.

Sukhen Dey (Weightlifting): In men’s weightlifting 56 kg category, Sukhen Dey had claimed gold medal at the CWG. At the Asian Games however, Sukhen Dey failed to enter top-six and finished 12th among 14 lifters in the men’s 56 kg category. In group B, he disappointed and ended in fifth place out of six lifters.

K Sanjita Chanu (Weightlifting): In women’s weightlifting 48 kg category K Sanjita Chanu at the CWG won gold medal, but at the Asian Games she finished 10th after managing total lift of only 166 kg.

Parupalli Kashyap (Badminton): At the CWG shuttler, Parupalli Kashyap became the first Indian man in 32 years to win badminton gold at the Games when he defeated Singapore’s Derek Wong in the finals, but in the Asian Games Kashyap was a complete disappointment as he was knocked out of the event after losing his singles pre-quarterfinal to World No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.

Besides these aforementioned players, women wrestler Vinesh Phogat who had won gold at the CWG ended with bronze at the Asian Games. Likewise ace shooter Abhinav Bindra bid adieu to professional shooting but could not match his performance of the CWG and finished with bronze. In squash Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa had won gold at the CWG in women’s doubles, but at the Asian Games the two along with Anaka Alankamony and Aparajitha Balamurukan settled for silver in the women’s team finals.
