Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, popularly known as Salman Khan, is an Indian actor, producer and television personality. He has a huge fan following and support in India and is one of the most successful Bollywood actors in Indian cinema. He has also been a television host and has hosted shows like 10 Ka Dum and Bigg Boss that became very popular because of him. Salman Khan has been into controversies throughout his career and in one of these controversies, he was sentenced to five years imprisonment in 2015 but he was acquitted later. Born on 27th December 1965 Salman was born to Salim Khan and Salma Khan. His father is a renowned writer and the family hails from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Salman has two brothers Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan and two sisters Arpita and Alvira and he is the eldest of all his siblings. His step-mother is the famous actress Helen. Salman completed his schooling from St Stanislaus High School in Bandra, Mumbai. He also studied at The Scindia School in Gwalior previously. He then attended St. Xaviers College in Mumbai but later dropped out. He started his career in Bollywood and made his acting debut with a supporting role in the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi . His first leading role was in Sooraj Barjatyas Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). The movie was a huge hit and it became one of Indias highest grossing films and it earned him a best actor nomination a Filmfare.

Salman later featured in Baaghi: A Rebel for Love which had a moderate success in box office. He then also acted in movies like Patthar Ke Phool, Sanam Bewafa and Kurbaan in the same year but those were moderately successful. All his releases in 1992-93 were moderately successful in the box office. He made his successful return in 1994 in the movie Hum Aapke Hain Koun, directed by Sooraj Barjatya marking Khans second collaboration with director. The movie was a huge hit and during the 1995 awards season, the film won 3 Filmfare Awards for Best Director, Best Film and Best Actress. The movie also received a National Award for popular film of the year. The movie earned over 1.35 billion rupees worldwide and became the biggest Bollywood hit of the year. The film broke all the previous records and maintained itself as the highest-grossing Bollywood film for 7 years. In 1995 he starred in Karan Arjun alongside Shahrukh Khan. The movie was successful and became the second biggest hit of the year and Salman was again nominated in the Filmfare Awards under Best Actor category. His next commercial success was in the movie Judwaa released in 1997 directed by David Dhawan.

In 1998, Khan worked in different films and his first release was Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya opposite Kajol and it became one of the biggest commercially hit movie of the year. His next release was a moderately successful movie Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai. He also appeared with an extended cameo in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and won the Filmfare Award under Best Supporting Actor category. In 1999, Khan appeared in three films and his first two films Hum Saath Saath Hain and Biwi No 1 were a commercially hit movie whereas the third release Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam opposite Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgan was a commercially and critically hit movie and it earned him another nomination of Best Actor in the Filmfare Awards. The next major success Salman received was in 2003 after the release of his movie Tere Naam. The movie till date is considered as Salmans best film. The movie was critically and commercially successful.

In 2004 and 2005 Salman worked in two comedy movies Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and No Entry respectively and both the movie became moderately successful. His next successful movie was in 2007 in the movie Partner and the movie did well at the box office. Khan then also moved to small screen and hosted 10 Ka Dum in 2009 and it received huge success and had a high TRP. It had been a while that Salman had a hit film in the theatres.

However, the turning point in his career was the movie Wanted directed by Prabhu Deva. The movie became a superhit and it helped Salman to regain his control in Bollywood. Salman tasted success again in 2010 after he appeared in Dabangg where he played the role of a fearless cop. It broke several box-office records and in the first week itself the movie earned 808.7 million rupees. Dabangg earned 2.15 billion rupees worldwide and was the highest grossing bollywood film of 2010.

Salman also hosted Big Boss on Colors and his appearance led to a huge rise in TRPs of the show. Salmans 2011 release was the movie Ready and it was a commercial hit. He next appeared in Bodyguard and it was a financially successful movie and earned 1409.5 million rupees and became the highest earning film of the year. Khan released two movies in 2012 and he his first release was Ek Tha Tiger opposite Katrina Kaif nd the movie made an extremely strong box office collections. The next release in the year was Dabangg 2 and the movie performed well in the theatres. In 2014, Salman appeared in Jai Ho and Kick and both the movie did extremely well.

In 2015, he did the movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the release broke several box-office records. The movie was the eighth consecutive film of Salman that crossed 100 crores. In 2016, Salman appeared in the movie Sultan opposite Anushka Sharma and the movie received positive reviews both critically and commercially.

Salman Khan has been into controversies throughout his career. He was accused in the 2002 hit-and-run case. Salman Khan was arrested for rash and negligent driving after his car ran into a bakery in Mumbai. One person died whereas three were injured. Charges of culpable homicide were laid against him but later dropped. He was again charged for culpable homicide in the case to which he pleaded not guilty. He has since been acquitted.

In 2002, he was in a relationship with Aishwarya Rai but they broke up later. Salman was accused of harassing Rai and she claimed that he was not able to come to terms with their break-up and was threatening her. A complaint against him was also lodged.

Salman was also sentenced to one-year imprisonment for hunting an endangered species called Chinkara in Rajasthan during the shoot of the movie Hum Saath Saath Hai. The sentenced was stayed after the high court appeal. Salman was acquitted from the case in the year 2016.

Salman Khan is unmarried and lives with his family. He is also known for his charities and he started an NGO called Being Human which sells T-Shirts and other products and a portion of the sales go to a worthy cause supporting the underprivileged. He has recently launched Being Human bicycles.

Salman Khan will be appearing in Tubelight and Tiger Zinda Hai in 2017.
