Jitendra Singh

Jitendra Singh is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who is serving in the second Narendra Modi government as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. Singh, who was also a professor of diabetes, is also Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space.

Singh's venture into politics began in 2008 when he was made spokesperson of the Shri Amarnathji Sangharsh Samiti, which was an umbrella organization of right-wing parties during the Amarnath land transfer controversy. In the 2009 general election, the BJP dropped his name from the list of candidates, and in 2012 he took premature retirement as a professor of endocrinology in the Government Medical College in Jammu to join the BJP.

POLITICAL CAREER:

In 2014, Singh contested the general election from Udhampur constituency in his native Jammu and was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha after he defeated Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress. During the first Modi government, he was appointed Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Minister of State for Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space.

Singh was also appointed Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Ministry of Earth Science from May 2014 to November 2014. He also held the post of Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region from November 2014 to May 2019.

During the 2019 general election, Singh was renominated as BJP's candidate from the Udhampur constituency and was he re-elected to the 17th Lok Sabha after he defeated Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh by approximately 350,000 votes. On May 2019, it was announced that Singh had retained his ministries in the second Modi government.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Singh was born on November 6, 1956 in Jammu of Jammu and Kashmir to Rajinder Singh and Shanti Devi. He is the eldest of three brothers and his younger brother, Devender Singh Rana, is also a politician belonging to the National Conference party. Singh married Manju Singh on April 16, 1982 and he has two sons with her. He is also an accomplished writer, having authored 8 books.

EARLY LIFE:

He completed his MBBS from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, and received his M.D. (Medicine) degree from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.

BEFORE POLITICS:

Before becoming a full-time politician, he was a professor of diabetes and endocrinology. He has also worked as a newspaper columnist writing for Kashmir Times and then the Daily Excelsior. His weekly column 'Tales of Travesty' used to feature in the editorial section of the newspaper until his election to the Lok Sabha in 2014.
