Transgender anchor Padmini Prakash's first news bulletin goes viral

India has recognised the third gender, with the state of Bihar including the transgender population in the backward castes. But the country has a long way to go as far as equality of the LGBTQ communities and the heterosexuals goes. And so, when a gay man enters Bigg Boss as a contestant, it is news. Or when eunuch Lakshmi Tripathi becomes famous and makes TV appearances, it is news. And when a transgender herself is reading out the news to you on a TV channel, it is definitely news!

Padmini Prakash of Lotus News in Tamil Nadu fought discrimination and presented her first news bulletin on August 15, 2014 – India’s Independence Day and has even been promoted at her job now owing to her popularity.

Padmini earlier worked as a dancer and TV actress. She told ANI: “In media transgenders are shown as someone performing dance, singing songs and as a comedy piece but what I am doing as a news anchor is a very responsible job. Why should I not come in front of a camera? Why should my face not be known to everyone? Because of what I am doing we can see changes in the society.”

Becoming a TV presenter was the childhood dream of Padmini Prakash. “Even we should have an achievement, an ambition. It was my childhood dream to become a news anchor,” she said. Lotus News Channel Chairman G K Selvakumar said, “Padmini is able to read news like anyone else, so we gave her the job. Her fluency of words is better than others.”
