Margarita with a Straw song Foreign Balamwa: Catchy, folksy number for Kalki Koechlin by Mikey McCleary

Kalki Koechlin’s Margarita with a Straw is a film that is not only in the news for its unusual subject, but also for its unusual music. The second song of the film is just out! Titled Foreign Balamwa, the song is rather catchy and is a surprising blend of modern and folk by the man who is now known for such songs – Mikey McClearyForeign Balamwa – O Pardesi Saiyaan, sung by Sonu Kakkar, is in the same league as McCleary’s other songs for Bollywood movies, including Khoya Khoya Chand from Shaitan.

The lyrics of Foreign Balamwa are by ad man Prasoon Joshi, who has just been awarded a Padma Shri award for his work in Bollywood. Prasoon has written the lyrics for (among other projects) Aamir Khan’s Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots and Satyamev Jayate, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black. (Incidentally, Bhansali has also been awarded with the Padma Shri this year.)

Margarita with a Straw deals with the subject of a person suffering from cerebral palsy and how she explores her life, including her sexuality. The film is directed by Shonali Bose, who is rather relieved that her film was passed by the Central Board of Film Certification with minor cuts.
