Coke Studio@MTV Season 4: Sona Mohapatra and Rituraj Mohanty create magic in Rangabati song fusion!

Coke Studio@MTV Season 4 presents the modern version of Odisha’s most popular folk song – Rangabati. The song, rendered by Sona Mohapatra and Rituraj Mohanty (India’s Raw Star winner), was leaked online ahead of Coke Studio’s forthcoming episode, which will feature it. The singers are in top form in the video, giving their best to Rangabati. Music producer Ram Sampath, who is Sona’s husband and a Bollywood composer, has also given his best to recreate the folk song. Ram fuses the Oriya song with Tamil rap, sung by rapper duo Tony Sebastian and Rajesh Radhakrishnan.

The Rangabati song was originally recorded in mid-1970, sung by Jitendra and Krishna Patel. The additional lyrics were by Mitrabhanu Guintia and original music by Prabhudatta Pradhan. In the new version of Rangabati, the blend of Sambalpuri and Tamil languages lend it a distinctive quality.

The idea of love for one’s beloved in the original Rangabati is merged with love for one’s mother and motherland in the Tamil rap. This is further mixed with Oriya poem Bande Utkal Janini that is again reverence for one’s motherland. The Oriya connection is strong because both Sona Mohapatra and Rituraj Mohanty come from there, and we can feel the connect in the song. Rangabati is a must-listen song! Watch it here.
