Kabaddi goes international as World Kabaddi League (WKL) commences in London on Sunday. Quintessentially an Indian sport but it is all set to fledge round the globe as the tournament is to be played across three continents. The title sponsors of the tournament are Wave Group. The one-of-its-kind sports league, the World Kabaddi League will see many star international and national players participating in the multi-nation event.
The league is scheduled to be played for over four months with its first season to be played on weekends. The multi-lateral event will see eight franchisees in action and the league will follow the Formula One style touring format. WKL 2014 will see 94 matches being played, with its first match to be played on August 9.
The eight teams will participate across international eight international cities like as London, Birmingham, Dubai, New York and six national cities like as New Delhi, Jalandhar, Ludhiana among many. Bollywood stars like Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Honey Singh who own a team each in the tournament will ensure that the league doesn’t fall short of glamour.
Featuring eight teams, including one from Pakistan, the tournament will be played for four months in USA, England, Canada, UAE and India. The official broadcaster of 2014 World Kabaddi League will be PTC Punjabi globally, and for India it will be telecasted on Sony Six.
The Wave World Kabaddi League will be following the round robin format. Total of 94 matches will be played of which 90 will be league games, while four will be play-offs. The matches will be played in four quarters– 12 minutes each, with three minutes break between first and second, and third and fourth quarter. The half time will be of 10 minutes. Every player’s salary is capped at 1.5 crore, while the tournament winner’s cheque is priced at 1.7 crores.
The President of the World Kabaddi League is Punjab’s deputy chief minister Sukbhir Singh Badal and the Commissioner is Hockey Legend Pargat Singh. The tournament’s eight teams are Khalsa Warriors (owned by Akshay Kumar), United Singhs (owned by Sonakshi Sinha), Yo Yo Tigers (owned by Honey Singh), Vancouver Lions, Punjab Thunder, Lahore Lions, California Eagles and Royal Kings.
