US Open 2014 Tournament Preview and Analysis: Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams start as favourites

It is time for tennis fiesta as the US Open 2014 starts this Monday and planet’s best players will be on display. The last Grand Slam of this year is expected to be an exciting affair to catch. The new generation of tennis will try to outplay old masters, while the seniors will be equally enthusiast to stay strong.

Men’s Singles at the US Open 2014

Defending champion Rafael Nadal is out of the US Open nursing a wrist injury and that gives Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray a bit of breather, but lobbing a challenge at them are some youngsters like David Ferrer, Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov, Kei Nishikori, etc. who have been imposing this season.

World number one Novak Djokovic will be eyeing his second Major this year after winning the Wimbledon earlier. Roger Federer who has 17 titles on his back enters the competition in hunt of 18th and “Fedex’’ will be on toes to deliver a standout performance while Andy Murray who looked a bit rusty earlier after making a comeback from back surgery will aim for glory to be back in the reckoning.

The newer lot of tennis will be itching to go out in the Flushing Meadows and cause upsets. Stanislas Wawrinka at the start of this year stunned Rafael Nadal in four sets to win Australian open and will be eager to emulate his act. Couple of weeks back Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overpowered Roger Federer to lift the Rogers Cup. Grigor Dimitrov and Milos Raonic both made to their first Major semis at Wimbledon, Dimitrov defeated Andy Murray in the quarter-final and eventually lost to Novak Djokovic while Raonic went past Nick Kyrgios before going down to Roger Federer. Both will be eyeing to better their results this time round.

Women’s Singles at the US Open 2014

Serena Williams successfully defended her title at The US Open last year to claim his fifth championship at the Flushing Meadows. She is one of the top contenders to win this time as well, but this year she has not zipped past second, third and fourth round of the Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open respectively. Serena aiming for her sixth championship will have to be on top her game. French open winner Maria Sharapova missed out on action last year due to a shoulder injury and will be hopeful to add the US Open title to her list of Grand Slams.

Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and runner-up Eugenie Bouchard, Rogers Cup winner Agnieszka Radwanska and world number two Simona Halep are also front runners to catch the glory.
