Former World no. 1 Martina Hingis and her German partner Sabine Lisicki ended the run of fifth seed pair of India’s Sania Mirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black in the women’s doubles semi-finals of Sony Open Tennis. Hingis and Lisicki defeated the fifth seeded Indian Wells 2014 finalist in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
This is for the first time Martina Hingis has entered a WTA final at the Sony Open Tennis 2014 in Miami since 2007. Swiss player Martina Hingis, who made a return on the international tennis circuit last year showed great promise at the Key Biscayne. Partnering the 2013 Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki, Martina Hingis survived a tough match in the quarterfinals against Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova, where they saved seven match points to win the match.
Fifth seeded duo Sania Mirza and Cara Black have had a satisfying season so far with semi-finals and finals appearance but are still to capture their first title of this calendar year. As for Martina Hingis, with the win over Sania-Cara pair in semis, she enters her 52 WTA doubles finals, with win loss record of 37-14 in her career. Sabine Lisicki makes to her fourth WTA doubles final.
In the finals to be played on Sunday, Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki will face the challenge in form of second seeded Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. The Russian pair defeated the eighth seeds Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears 7-5, 7-5.
