Two-times defending champion Serena Williams will be playing seventh seeded Ekaterina Makarova for a place in third consecutive US Open final. For Serena, there are numerous reasons to be championships title winner here in the US Open 2014. She is chasing record number of grand slams won by the legends like Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in women’s history. Serena has had quite a low phase in this year’s grand slam platform and has not moved past fourth round but playing in front of her home crowd has brought the best of Serena Williams – a sheer dominance displayed in women’s tennis.

Top seed Serena Williams is facing the challenge of fending off an unusual face at this level of the tournament, Ekaterina Makarova. The 17th seed Makarova pulled off back-to-back stunning victories over rising player and seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard in Round 4 and two-times Australian Open Champion Victoria Azarenka in quarter-finals. These achievements should help her resume in front of her opponent Serena that boasts of 17 grand slam titles.

In this tournament, Serena Williams is yet to drop her set, which is not very surprising considering the red-hot form she is in at the moment. It will require some out of the box hitting and bad day for Serena Williams for the World No. 1 to face any kind of trouble in this semi-final. The good news for Ekaterina Makarova would be the fact she has beaten the American sensation recently in 2012 Australian Open, a feat that is eluding from a player like Maria Sharapova’s career graph. Serena Williams leads 4-1 in an all time career head-to-head.

Prediction: Serena Williams should comfortably reach finals in straight sets.
