Sania Mirza and Prarthana Gulabrao Thombare win 22nd Bronze for India in Asian Games 2014
This is second bronze medal for Indian tennis camp after Yuki Bhambri also winning bronze medal in men's singles.
Sania Mirza and her doubles partner Prarthana Gulabrao Thombare went down fighting against the higher seed from Chinese Taipei to settle for bronze medal in women’s doubles. The Indian pair lost to Chinese Taipei duo Chin Wei Chan and Su Wei Hsieh in three set 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10) in the semifinals held at Thermal wells tennis stadium – Show Court. Sania Mirza and Prarthana Gulabrao Thombare lost the opening set after a gruelling encounter in tie-breaker 6-7 before making the comeback in the second set. They won the second set 6-2 to level the match but the second seeded Taipei players proved too heavy to be disposed by the fifth seeded Indian who ended up losing 1 (10)- 0.
Earlier, Yuki Bhambri settled for men’s singles bronze medal, in one of the first medal matches in tennis by Indian players in Asian Games 2014. Yuki Bhambri lost the singles semifinal match to teenager Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a very topsy-turvy match that saw once dominant Bhambri squander the opening set lead to succumb against his swift opponent.
But a brilliant performance by Indian pair Sanam Singh and Saketh Myneni helped them overcome top seeded Thai team of Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana to reach the men’s doubles final of the 17th Asian Games at the Yeorumul Tennis Courts here Sunday. The fifth seeded team beat their Thai opponents 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 in an hour and three minutes via a super tie-breaker to assure India of at least the silver medal.
