Parupalli Kashyap fails to lead India men’s badminton team to quarters in Asian Games 2014
Indian badminton women's team Saturday entered the quarterfinal of the Asian Games after thrashing Macau 3-0 in their pre-quarterfinal tie
India’s best male singles shuttler Parupalli Kashyap failed to lead India in the men’s team event to the next round in quarterfinals in Asian Games 2014. Parupalli Kashyap led side faltered miserably against the Republic of Korea and was handed heavy 3-0 defeat in the best of five matches. There were more expectations from the Indian side especially from Kashyap who recently won the gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow.
The first singles match featured Srikanth Kidambi of India against Wanho Son at Gyeyang Gymnasium. Shrikant put up a brave face gainst some great hitting by Wanho in the first game but eventually lost way as Wanho won the first match in straight sets 21-14, 21-8 to give South Korea 1-0 lead. In the second match featuring the men’s doubles event was another one-sided affair by the Korean duo Yeonseong Yoo & Yongdae Lee defeat India’s Sumeeth Reddy Buss & Manu Attri 21-12, 21-9.
Parupalli Kashyap came out to do some damage control in this must win tie by completely knocking out Hyunil lee in the first game, taking it 21-6. But amidst the home crowd support, the South Korean player found motivation and turned the match around to win the next two sets 21-14, 21-10. With the win the third tie, South Korea took an unassailable lead and beat India out of the team event.
Earlier, Indian badminton women’s team Saturday entered the quarterfinal of the Asian Games after thrashing Macau 3-0 in their pre-quarterfinal tie at the Gyeyang Gymnasium here. For India, singles stars Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu had comfortable victories while doubles pair of N. Sikky Reddy and Pradnya Gadre won convincingly in the third match of the tie.
