Mumbai Indians won its first and only championship in 2013, defeating Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs in the finals. The team has also been crowned Champions League T20 (CLT20) winners in 2011 and 2013 season.
Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Ricky Pointing have led team in the past. Rohit Sharma took over as captain from Pointing in the mid-season 2013 and steered his team to win IPL 6.
Mumbai Indians retained Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu from their previous squad for the 7th edition of IPL.
Mumbai Indians has had some rotten luck in the initial seasons despite being a strong and competitive team but losing out in the tournament in the league stages till they won the title in 2013. The team is brilliant and has lots of potential which it has shown on the field but as a team they don’t fire their cannons as much as their supporters and owners would like them to.
Despite being the strongest team on paper, Mumbai Indians have failed to register the number of wins in the Indian Premier League as that they should. Michael Hussey and Kieron Pollard’s batting will surely aim at defending the title when Mumbai Indians take to the field in IPL 2014.
Retired Australian batsman Michael Hussey and New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson were the top buys for the team in this year’s auction, shelling out Rs 5,00,00,000 and 4,50,00,000 respectively. Among Indian players the team paid Rs 3,25,00,000 for Pragyan Ojha and 2,60,00,000 for Zaheer Khan.
Kieron Pollard who has been nursing knee injury is expected to be back in action, the big hitting allrounder along with Corey Anderson label Mumbai Indians a strong force to reckon with.
The team also boasts WorldT20 2014 winning captain Lasith Malinga and West Indian bowler Krishmar Santokie, it will be interesting to see how the two ‘’slingers’’ spear team’s bowling attack.
Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Michael Hussey add experience to the team besides Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Pragyan Ojha, who have been ‘’hot picks’’ throughout IPL.
Batting: Mumbai Indians has the big and powerful hitters who can not only build partnerships and stabilize a seemingly drab innings but can also see the game through with match winning innings. The likes of Rohit Sharma (who is the new captain) can give the side a strong innings and has shown particularly good form in the Indian Premier League seasons over the years. Ambati Rayudu is able to impress the cricketing fraternity with every passing game and is in a master class when it comes to playing textbook shots that would make his coach proud.
Bowling: Lasith Malinga will be riding a wave of glory and pride especially after the winning the trophy in the last season and now winning the ICC World T20 2014 for Sri Lanka. The Mumbai Indians has a deadly arson with other deadly bowlers like Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and the likes of Pragyan Ojha can always be expected to deliver the wickets when no one expects it.
All Rounder: Kieron Pollard can smash the ball into the wickets as well smash the ball over the fielders into the crowds and despite his colossal height, he is an asset on the field.
