Liverpool play out tame goalless draw against West Bromwich Albion in Barclays Premier League

Liverpool

Liverpool faltered yet again in the race for a Champions League spot as the Reds continuously opened the West Bromwich Albion defence but rarely possessed the cutting edge qualities that is a prerequisite of a Barclays Premier League top four team, leave alone a title winning one.

With injuries continually plaguing Daniel Sturridge’s career, Mario Balotelli was given a rare start and the Italian did little to justify his place in the XI. His awareness and presence in the box was poor and so was his striking prowess, which has resembled a Emile Heskey on a bad day all year. Steven Gerrard went close with a free-kick, which went narrowly over the bar. But this was not how the Liverpool skipper would have envisaged his 500th game for the club to have turned out.

Chances continued to go begging as the young, promising Jordan Ibe hit the crossbar with his effort while West Brom nearly broke the deadlock through the hardworking Craig Gardner. His effort though, only hit the side-netting. Liverpool’s defence did not bear a settled look, despite earning a clean sheet. Emre Can and Dejan Lovren continued to struggle for positional solidity. Overall, it was yet another game where the Liverpool frontline fired blanks as a Champions League spot moved further away from their grasp.
