Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa get silver in the Women’s Doubles in the Commonwealth Games 2014

India’s golden hope with the defending champions Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa crashed after the duo faltered at the last hurdle of the Women’s doubles final. The Indian pair of Jwala and Ashwini lost in straight games 21-17, 23-21 to Malaysian pair of KW Woon and VKM Hoo. It was just not the day for the 2010 Commonwealth Games champions as they squandered five game points against a steely Malaysian pair to not push the match in the deciding last game.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa got off to a good start in the first game where they led for majority of it till the Woon/Hoo took four straight points to pocket the opening game. In the second set, it was more of heartbreak for the cheering fans in the Emirates Venue  as they held five game points but failed to convert any of it and finally lost it in straight sets. With the silver medal, the pair added fourth medal in badminton event. The bronze medal went to Gabriele Adcock and Lauren Smith of England.

Earlier Parupalli Kashyap won the gold medal in the Men’s Singles Final match at Glasgow. The second seed Indian defeated Derek Wong from Singapore in a tightly contested final match. He won it in three games 21-14, 11-21, 21-19, in a match played for over an hour.

Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and RV Gurusaidutt also bagged bronze medal from their respective women’s and men’s singles event. India’s medal tally move to 64 including 15 gold, 30 silver and 19 bronze.
