Joshna Chinappa Profile: Indian Squash Player Joshna Chinappa's Latest News & Live Updates from Asian Games 2014

Bringing the spotlight on a relatively less known racquet sport in India is Joshna Chinappa from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The squash player is one of the few upcoming players in the sport from our country, putting our nation on the global map with the gold medal along with Dipika Pallikal in this year’s Commonwealth Games held Glasgow.

Born to Anjan and Sunita Chinappa, Joshna, who will turn 28 on 15 September, was the first Indian to win the British Squash Championship title in the U19 category in 2003; becoming the youngest among her compatriots to do so. Now coached by former men’s world number one James Willstrop’s father Malcolm Willstrop, she is currently ranked 21 in the WSA (Women’s Squash Association) rankings.

She was part of the Women’s team that brought home the Bronze medal in the 2010 Asian Games held in Guangzhou. The seven-time winner in various Squash Championships suffered a career threatening knee injury in 2011 only to come back stronger and achieve plaudits in the years that followed.

Winning the Chennai Open in 2012 was one of her best achievements after beating England’s Sarah Jane Perry. She was conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award last year, becoming the second female player to receive the same after Dipika. Along with her compatriot, all eyes will be on Joshna to do India proud once again and she will undoubtedly be aiming to land India’s first ever Asian Games gold.
