FC Goa 1-2 Chennaiyin FC ( Gregory Arnolin 65′ – Balwant Singh 32′, Elano 43′)
FULL TIME: Fernandes tries to deliver the ball towards his teammate but his pass has too much strength and flies further ahead into the hands of Bracigliano. The referee blows for the final whistle and Chennaiyin FC have won thanks to goals from Balwant Singh and Elano Blumer. This turned out to be quite an interesting game with the first Indian scoring as well as the first marquee player getting his name on the score-sheet. Gregory Arnolin’s goal only proved to be a consolation for the hosts as Zico’s men succumbed. Thank you for tuning in to our live commentary of the match. Do tune in tomorrow as NorthEast United FC take on Atletico de Kolkata at the Indira Gandhi Stadium. It’s goodbye from us till then!
90+3′: FC Goa have a corner and they take it quickly. Miranda sends the ball flying towards the face of goal but not a single blue shirt connect and score. It is cleared and Goa are still looking to salvage a point.
90+2′: Very very very and mind you even if I add very a 100 times its not enough to explain this poor free-kick from Pinheiro. Not something the home fans would want to see as the Portuguese player’s flies far away from goal. Bengelloun keeps the ball alive but they eventually concede possession.
90′: We have five minutes of added time and the Chennai bench can’t believe it. They are still searching for the equaliser while Chennaiyin FC have a futile attempt from Jairo Suarez fly wayward.
87′: Attempt – Chennaiyin FC – BLOCKED: Mendoza does well and shows some brilliant individual skill to dance past the Goan players. His charges inside the box but his shot is blocked well by Gregory. On the other end, FC Goa have a half-chance as Miranda charges down the left and delivers a tempting cross towards Ranti Martins. But Mendy is the first to reach the ball and clears his lines. The equaliser continues to evade the hosts.
84′: Attempt – FC GOA – SAVED BY BRACIGLIANO: Ranti Martins nearly makes an instant impact as Fernandes does well down the left and creates an opportunity for the Nigerian striker. The French shot-stopper is on hand to block the attempt and keep Chennaiyin’s lead intact.
78′: Substitution – FC Goa: Last roll of dice from Zico as Ranti Martins is on field in place of Miguel Herlein. A minute later, Chennaiyin FC take off Balwant Singh and bring on Jeje Lalpekhlua.
76′: Bengelloun wins a corner on the left and asks the crowd to roar for the team. The set-piece is cleared for another corner on the opposite side. Miranda takes it this time and nearly catches Bracigliano off guard with a direct attempt on goal from a corner. But the ball bounces off the crossbar after a touch from the goalkeeper. The corner from the right is delivered by Pinheiro which Robert Pires shoots wayward. Not something we’d expect from a player like him!
75′: Substitution – Chennaiyin FC: Bojan Djordjic relinquishes the armband and Jairo Suarez, the Colombian, replaces the skipper.
67′: Substitution – Chennaiyin FC: Elano Blumer is taken off and John Mendoza is brought on. FC Goa win a free-kick after Abhishek Das, who is booked clobbers down Miranda. As the ball is delivered, Bracigliano is the first to it and punches it away for a corner. Additionally, his elbow catches Bengelloun in the mouth. The home side are pressing for the equaliser and the corner is cleared for another corner and their attack eventually fizzles out.
65′: GOAL – FC Goa: Gregory Arnolin pulls one back for the hosts and this could be all that they need to come back into this game. Miranda’s corner is cleared but only as far as Fernandes, who plays it back to the substitute. The 32-year-old’s cross is flying wide but Bengelloun gets enough on it to put it back near the face of goal and his centre-back partner is there to tap the ball in. GAME ON NOW!
62′: Substitution – FC Goa: Second substitution from Zico as Clifford Miranda is brought on in place of Narzary. The 20-year-old Assam lad’s last contribution was an attempt on goal from the left after some neat build-upl play with his team-mates!
60′: Pires tries to set up Narzary for goal but his pass is straight at Bracigliano, who fails to catch it in the first attempt and gathers the spoils; luckily not under pressure from anyone.
58′: Substitution – FC Goa: Quite a strange change I would say from the home side as Marcelino is taken off and Bruno Pinheiro is brought on. The Portuguese was arguably the most active player for Goa.
55′: Attempt- Off-target – Chennaiyin FC: The visitors look more likely to score the third goal. Elano steers wide and crosses the ball for the onrushing Pelissari. But the striker only fires it over under persure from Narayan Das. Goal-kick it is!
52′: Holicharan Narzary has been quite a livewire down the left wing for FC Goa. Can he create something alongside Edgar Marcelino and Pires? Marcelino shows some magic on the right and delivers a beautiful cross for someone to tap in. Panic ensues but Gouramangi Singh clears it away for a corner which is punched away by Bracigliano and eventually cleared.
50′: Yellow Card – Chennaiyin FC: This is disappointing and absolutely ridiculous football. Robert Pires once again is the target and Denson Devdas flattens the Frenchman. When will this stop?
46′: FC Goa start the half after some ‘shall we assume’ really tough half-time talk from Zico. Narayan Das, who is already booked gets into a small scuffle with Denson Devadas. The referee gives him a last warning!
Not exactly the kind of score that Zico would have envisioned. After a bright start, FC Goa have been undone by some silly defending by Balwant Singh and a free-kick from Chennaiyin FC’s marquee player Elano that puts the away side into a 2-0 lead going into the break.
HALF-TIME: FC Goa 0-2 Chennaiyin FC (Balwant Singh 32′, Elano 43′)
45′: We have two minutes of added time and Marcelino tries to conjure something from the edge of their opponent’s box. FC Goa have a late shout for penalty turned down with Bengelloun feeling that Gouramangi Singh brought him down unfairly inside Chennaiyin FC’s 18-yard box. The referee feels there wasn’t enough to deem that worthy of a penalty and instead blows for a half-time.
44′: Yellow Card – FC Goa: Another unnecessary tackle and Narayan Das enters the referee’s book. The 21-year-old is outpaced by Abhishek Das and with the fear of conceding a third goal, he gives away a free-kick.
43′: GOAL – Chennaiyin FC: Chance for the visitors to double the lead after Prabir Das brings down Balwant Singh just outside the edge of the box. ELANO hits it typically the way any Brazilian would and Zico is absolutely furious! Surprisingly, a goalkeeper should be covering the far post instead of the near post, wonder why was Seda standing in the middle and chose to move towards the near post leaving ample space for Elano to score on the right.
38′: Yellow Card – Chennaiyin FC: Elano Blumer is booked for tripping Robert Pires. And just seconds later, the Frenchman is fouled again; his time by Bruno Pelissari. He is not happy with the way the visitors are playing.
35′: Corner – FC Goa: The hosts look to respond immediately and win a free-kick 35-yards away from goal. Edgar Marcelino takes it and the ball takes a neat deflection off Djordjic as Bracigliano is wrong footed. Luckily for the away side, the ball flies just over his goal for a corner which is then cleared.
32′: GOAL – CHENNAIYIN FC : BALWANT SINGH – FINALLY an Indian has scored a goal in ISL 2014 and the away side lead. Dhanachandra Singh is sent down the byline and his cross is poorly cleared by the FC Goa defence. Elano pounces on the ball and tries to create something for himself. He is tripped and the ball falls for Balwant Singh, whose shot is saved but the ball curls inside and Seda could do nothing about it.
30′: Midfielders from both teams are trying to create something for their attacking line but both sets of defenders are quite alert and warding off their opponent’s attack very skilfully.
27′: Attempt – Off-target – FC Goa: The home crowd want a goal and soon but it’s none other than marquee player and captain Robert Pires, who tries his luck from outside the box. The Frenchman races through from midfield but does not connect his foot properly with the ball. Goal-kick it is!
25′: Free-kick for Chenaniyin FC deep inside their own half. Herlein goes to shoot the ball but Abhishek Das is quicker to it and the 21-year-old slams his foot straight into the 23-year-old’s leg.
22′: Attempt – Off-target – Chennaiyin FC: Pelissari tries to pull off a Xabi Alonso-esque goal with a shot from near the half-way line but the ball is way too high to bother Seda in any way. Ambitious one from the Brazilian there!
17′: Yellow Card – Chennaiyin FC – Abhishek Das makes an absolutely dangerous, unnecessary and silly tackle on Herlein, who had no one to assist him. Easy decision for the referee to book the 23-year-old.
15′: Chennaiyin FC have managed to keep some possession and are trying to pressurise the home side. Horrendous shot there from Balwant Singh as it ends closer to the corner flag than towards Seda’s goal.
11′: Free-kick for Chennaiyin FC: Elano cleverly wins a free-kick outside the edge of Goa’s 18-yard box after being fouled by Peter Carvalho. Can it prove costly for the home side? The Brazilian’s free-kick is blocked by the wall but the ball is not cleared and Mendy’s attempted cross from inside the box is blocked off for a corner. Even this set-piece does not result in a goal and Zico will heave a sigh of relief as his side clear their lines.
6′: Attempt – Off-target – FC Goa: Goa win a corner and Bengelloun tries to score with a bullet header which flies wide. The home side are pressing. The goal-kick from Bracigliano reaches Seda in the other-half and they now look to counter. Pires is sent through on goal but the angle is too difficult for him and he tries to set Marcelino up for goal. But the Portuguese shoots over!
4′: Denson Devadas has fouled Robert Pires and the referee calls his captain Djordjic and tells the player to keep his cool. Free-kick taken well that flies straight to Bracigliano. Nobody gets their heads to it and that could have been a genuine opportunity.
1′: Chennaiyin FC in white colours get us underway but they have lost possession and Narzary has won and early throw deep inside the Chennai half on the left had side.
We are just moments away from kick-off and the teams our out on the field waiting for the Indian national anthem to be played and a look at the crowd will tell you all the passion that the Goan people share for this beautiful game. FC Goa captain Robert Pires has won the toss and the Arsenal legend greets his counterpart Bojan Djordjic.
