Mumbai Indians were kept down to 157-6 in 20 overs after been put to bat first by Chennai Super Kings. MI lost early wicket in shape of CM Gautam (9) who looking to play a sweep shot was caught at square leg off Samuel Badree who replaced Ben Hilfenhaus for this game.
After 16-1 Lendl Simmons and Ambati Rayudu added a 66 run stand for the 2nd wicket. The duo attacked CSK bowlers in power play and after that with introduction of spinners played cautiously. Simmons who was playing his first game of this IPL looked in good shape as he hit couple of 6s and three 4s in his innings of 38 before he holed out to FAF du Plessis off Ravi Ashwin.
After Simmons departure at 77-2 CSK bowlers bowled good lines and contained MI batsmen. Rohit Sharma and Rayudu were not allowed to free their arms and big shots came rarely. In-between Rayudu completed his 9th fifty off 38 balls. Rohit Sharma (19) was left with no option but to slog as he tried to hit Ashwin over the deep mid-wicket but was caught by Suresh Raina. The combination of Ashwin-Raina provided CSK with another wicket when Pollard was caught by Raina on first ball for a duck. At the end of 18th over MI were 129-5.
MI in space of 6 balls lost three wickets. The latest of three to fell was time Rayudu (59) who hit it straight to Ravindra Jadeja. Ironically he too was caught at deep mid-wicket. Aditya Tare (9) and Corey Anderson (18*) towards the end played some
lustrous blows to help MI post 157-6 Ravi Ashwin who was expensive in his last game came back strong to pick three wickets giving away 30 runs. Ishwar Pandey (1-34), Mohit Sharma (1-26) and Samuel Badree (1-34) were the other bowlers to pick wickets.
