India vs England, 6th ODI Carlton MID Tri-series Preview: MS Dhoni faces selection conundrum – Best XI or New Combination?
India is set to take on England in the sixth One-Day International (ODI) match of the Carlton MID tri-series at the Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) Stadium in Perth on Friday
When India take on England in the sixth One-Day International (ODI) match of the Carlton MID tri-series at the Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) Stadium in Perth on Friday, scenes will be much different to what they experienced in an Australian tri-series they did last time around in 2012. No need to chase down targets within 40 overs, no need to wait for results of the other matches. Bonus points, net run rates and everything else has gone out of the window. Only victory or defeat matters.
This could well be India’s last international match before the 2015 World Cup; which effectively means, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni and the Indian bowling attack has just one match to regain their golden touch. Catch the revised schedule of the India-Australia-England tri-series here
With Rohit Sharma expected to miss the final group stage encounter, Shikhar Dhawan could get one last chance to prove his mettle ahead of the World Cup. Ravindra Jadeja has been with the side for over two months now in Australia, but is yet to play a single match. He continues to remain a crucial cog in the Indian set-up – with his ability to contribute with bat, bowl and in the field.
Ishant Sharma too is coming after a long-layoff from injury. His success in Australian conditions and ability to be a brilliant bowler in conditions which assist good bounce, Ishant Sharma becomes the most crucial bowler in a set-up that lacks wicket-taking options.
A lot of aspects of the Indian game needs to be tightened and the team management has just one game, at best two to try out every possible combination, which makes the match more about just victory or defeat. With innumerable weak points to cover, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni faces the selection conundrum – what is more important – Victory or combination. Will India look to win, get to play another match and carry forward a more positive momentum or will they look to try out new combinations?
England put up an excellent show against India in their second match of the tri-series. They also raised their performance against Australia in the previous match, yet find themselves in a do-or-die situation. Nonetheless, they look in a much better position going into the clash against India. The form of the top-order, especially Ian Bell should be good news for the Poms. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, it is just one clash at the WACA which will matter.
