With the second set of quarter-final matches over, the semi-finals line up for the women’s singles was ready. The highest seed left so far in the tournament, fourth seed Simona Halep from Romania and German player Andrea Petkovic registered their respective win against Svetlana Kuznetsova and Sara Errani to set up a semi-finals clash against each other. With their clash, one thing is sure that French Open 2014 will see a new finalist.
The two ladies, Simona Halep and Andrea Petkovic have quite a many similarities as both of them are making their first grand slam semi-finals appearance. For both of them it will be a good opportunity to make it to their first finals at the major tournament. Both Simona and Petkovic have come through several challenges in form of injuries and physical complexities. But the ladies have come as revelation to be at this stage of the tournament.
On one hand, the 22 year-old Romanian have rose considerably from 57 in the world ranking to breaking in the top five and on the other is German Andrea Petkovic who emerged strongly from career threatening injury to beat the likes of Sara Errani easily.
Simona Halep and Andrea Petkovic have met on three occasions with the Romanian leading the head-to-head record 2-1 against Petkovic. She has also won the last meeting against Petkovic in Tokyo last year. The match between Halep and Petkovic looks quite an even-steven but it is expected that the fourth seed should make to finals with tight straight sets victory over the German.
The other semi-final will be played between seventh seed Maria Sharapova and eighteenth seed Eugenie Bouchard. Out of the four semi-finalists, only Russian player Maria Sharapova has won grand slam titles as for the rest of them, it is their first experience at this level of an event.
