Manchester-United-1

Manchester United can stake a claim to be the biggest victors of Matchweek 16 of the Barclays Premier League 2014-15 , as they cruised past their old rivals, Liverpool in the biggest game of the weekend. Wayne Rooney’s clinical strike from outside the box gave United the lead and Juan Mata’s controversial second goal virtually put the tie to bed. Robin van Persie’s third goal and David De Gea’s outstanding work in front of goal ensured that United sealed their third spot in the table.

Christian Eriksen, meanwhile gave Tottenham a late winner with a quality strike as the Londoners continue to knock on the doors of a Champions League spot. Mauricio Pochettino’s side leapfrogged to the seventh spot, pushing Liverpool to 10th in the table.

On Monday, Everton too leapfrogged Liverpool after registering a 3-1 win over Queens Park Rangers (QPR) at Goodison Park. Ross Barkley, Kevin Mirallas, and Steven Naismith netted for the Toffees as Bobby Zamora scored the consolation for the visitors in the 80th minute.

Chelsea, meanwhile returned to winning ways. With Cesc Fabregas suspended for the clash against Hull City at Stamford Bridge.Eden Hazard dictated the game and scored as early as the seventh minute and Diego Costa added to his tally in the 68th minute to secure a 2-0 win.

Arsenal too bounced back from their disappointing 3-2 defeat against Stoke City with a 4-1 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates. Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla shared four goals between them to hand the Magpies their fifth defeat of the season. Reigning champions, Manchester City too kept up the pace on Jose Mourinho’s side with a narrow 1-0 win over lowly Leicester City. Frank Lampard scored the solitary goal of the match in the 40th minute turning home Samir Nasri’s cross.

Southampton were looking to end their three-match losing streak as they visited Burnley. However, Ronald Koeman’s side continued their Ashley Barnes’ 73rd minute strike handed Ronald Koeman’s side a 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor. Sunderland and West Ham United played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light and so did Crystal Palace against Hull City at Selhurst Park.
