Commonwealth Games 2014: It’s Raining Awards for Indian medalists at CWG 2014!

The Indian athletes who did the country proud in 20th Commonwealth games in Glasgow have all landed in India to warm receptions. They succeeded in alien conditions, tiring circumstances and at times biased judgments, to get laurels for the country. In addition to those athletes who won medals for the nation, contributions of those who did not finish in top 3 should not be forgotten. In recognition of their efforts, several state governments, associations and organizations have announced host of rewards for these sports personalities who represented the country in 2014 CWG.

Amongst them the prominent ones are –

1. Rajasthan Government: Vasundhara Raje led Rajasthan Government has announced a cash reward of 15 lakh rupees to ace shooter Apurvi Chandela for winning a gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth games at Glasgow. Apurvi did the country proud by winning gold in women’s shooting in 10m air rifle event.

2. Badminton Association of India:  The Badminton Association of India commonly known as BAI has announced bonus for Indian shuttlers who represented India in 2014 CWG.The financial rewards for Indian Contingent were announced by the BAI President Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta.Here is the break-up of the cash reward for individual shuttlers –

i. Kashyap Parupalli,who won a gold medal in men’s singles will be given 25 lakh rupees

ii. Indian duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa,who won a silver medal in women’s doubles will be awarded 10 lakh rupees each

iii. P. V. Sindhu and R. M. V. Gurusaidutt, who won bronze medal in women’s and men’s singles events respectively will be given 5 lakh each

iv. Srikanth Kidambi and PC Tulasi will be rewarded 1 lakh each.

3. Telangana Badminton Association (TBA):  TBA was not far behind in terms of giving awards. Its vice president, Chamundeshwaranath announced that Badminton gold medalist, Kashyap Parupalli, would be presented a car worth 10 lakh rupees immediately.Chamundeshwaranathis a sport enthusiast and is renowned for awarding the Indian sports persons across the categories. In the past, he has awarded –

i. Two cars to Tennis star Saina Mirza

ii. Two cars including a grand BMW to ace shuttler Saina Nehwal

iii. Two cars to P Gopichand, who is now an Indian Badminton Team’s chief coach and

iv. One car to Indian Women’s Cricketer Mithali Raj

4. Tamil Nadu Government: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa announced a cash reward of 50 lakh rupees toWomen’s Squash doubles gold medalist duo of Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa. The Chief Minister was delighted by the achievement and said, “I understand this is the first time that India has won a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in squash. Yet again, you have done both the nation and Tamil Nadu proud. Kindly accept my heartiest congratulations on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu on your splendid achievement.”

She has also announced a cash reward of 30 lakh rupees each to the Indian duo of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj, who won silver medal in men’s doubles badminton event. In an identical congratulatory letters to the paddlers, she said,“You have done both the nation and state of Tamil Nadu proud by winning a Silver Medal in the Men’s doubles event of Table Tennis at the ongoing Commonwealth Games”. She added,“Accept my heartiest congratulations on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu for your splendid achievement”.

5. Haryana Government: Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of Haryana announced that the cash rewards for the medal winners at CWG have been raised. Now the winners of gold, silver and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games, will get rupees 1 crore, 50 lakhs and 25 lakhs respectively instead of Rs 15lakhs, Rs 10 lakhs and Rs 5 lakhs that was given earlier.
