Action in Commonwealth Games 2014 gets underway today after a gaudy opening ceremony last night. London Olympics silver Medallist Vijay Kumar was the flag bearer and led the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony. Indians will be fighting for glory in various events like badminton, Hockey, Squash, etc. Here is brief about the Indians in action who will open their campaign on the first day of the competition on July 24, 2014. Badminton: Placed in Group B along with Ghana, Uganda and Kenya, India will square off against Ghana in the opening match and then later in the day will face Uganda.
Hockey: Indian women’s hockey team will open their campaign against Canada in a Group A fixture at the Glasgow National Hockey Center. The team is led by midfielder Ritu Rani.
Gymnastics: Indian Players will be seen in action today in team and individual events as well. Prabhjot Bajwa, Palak Kour Bijral, Mitali will compete in events like Hoop, Ball, Ribbon and Clubs.
Squash: In men’s singles Harinder Pal Sandhu, Mahesh Mangaonkar and Saurav Ghosal will be displaying their skills in respective contests and in women’s singles star player Dipika Pallkal and Anaka Alankamony will also be seen in action.
Table Tennis: India women will take on Barbados in their opening match and then face Nigeria while men will lock horns with Vanuatu and Northern Island.
Cycling: Cyclists Amrit Singh, Alan Baby, Amarjit Nagi will be seen competing in men’s sprint. Also competing in the men’s 4,000m team pursuit event will be four-member Indian team.
Judo: Navjot Chana (-60kg) will take on Tom Pappas who hails from Australia’s while Manjeet Nandal (-66kg) will face Malta’s Jeremy Saywell in the knockouts. While Indian women, Shushila Likmabam (-48kg) will face Cameroon’s Marie Medza Effa, Kalpana Thoudam (-52kg) will take on Australia’s Hannah Trotter and Shivani (-57kg) will meet Canada’s Jessica Klimkait.
Lawn Bowls: India face hosts Scotland in men’s triples first and then Niue Island while in men’s pairs England will challenge India. In women’s fours, India will face Fiji before taking on Niue Island. In women’s singles Nayanmoni Saikia will be up against Malaysian Siti Zalina Ahmad and later against Jo Edwards of New Zealand.
Swimming: Sajan Prakash will compete in men’s 440m freestyle and Prasanta Karmakar in men’s 100m freestyle.
