Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have met over two legs in the Spanish Super Cup, with both games ending in draws as Barcelona prevailed only due to scoring an away goal in Madrid. The two have also met in La Liga earlier this year but that match ended goalless. So it’s really hard to pick a clear winner as Atletico Madrid have really impressed this season in all competitions.

Atletico Madrid saw off AC Milan’s challenge in the Round of 16 through convincingly beating the Italian side 1-0 and then 4-1 at the Vicente Calderón Stadium. Barcelona tamed Manchester City in the Round of 16, winning 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium and then 2-1 at Camp Nou.

BARCELONA STATS

1- Barcelona have not lost a match in the Champions League quarter finals since April 2003, winning eight and drawing six of their games at this stage since.

2- Barcelona have won just two of their previous six Champions League matches against fellow Spanish sides (W2 D2 L2).

3- Lionel Messi has scored 67 goals in 84 Champions League appearances (excl. quals) – the only player to have scored more CL goals in Raul (71 in 142 apps).

4- Messi has scored in five successive Champions League appearances (eight goals) for the first time in his career (excl. qualifiers).

5- Barcelona have seen their opponent reduced to 10 men in four of their last seven Champions League matches.

6- Overall in CL history, Barcelona have seen 27 red cards given to opponents; nine more than any other side in the competition.

ATLETICO MADRID STATS

1- Atletico Madrid have won seven, drawn one and lost none of their eight matches in the Champions League so far this season – no side has won more CL games this season.

2- Atletico have conceded only four goals in their eight Champions League games this season; no side in the competition have conceded fewer.

3- Atletico Madrid have won their last three European matches against fellow Spanish sides; all in the 2011-12 Europa League and including their 3-0 victory over Athletic de Bilbao in the final.

4- This is the furthest that Atletico have progressed in the Champions League, while Barcelona will be appearing in the quarter finals of the Champions League for the 12th time.

5- Diego Costa has scored seven goals in five Champions League appearances this season and is already Atletico’s top scorer in CL history.

6- Atletico Madrid have played the most games in Champions League history (excl. qualifiers) without having been given a red card (30).

Which of the two Argentine coaches will triumph this time? With no clear winner from the three matches that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have faced each other in this season, which Spanish team will go ahead to the semi-final of the Champions League?
