141-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh and then late onslaught by James Faulkner saw Australia post a decent score of 278-8 in 50 overs against England in the final of Carlton MID ODI series.

Winning the toss, Eoin Morgan opted to field first and James Anderson in the very first over rewarded his captain with a wicket of Aaron Finch. Six overs later, Anderson struck once again to dismiss dangerous David Warner (12). Australian captain George Bailey was third wicket to fell for Australia when Stuart Broad had him caught with Australia’s score reading 46 for 3.

On the other end, Steven Smith (40) looked in fine touch and scored at a good rate. But rush of blood saw him stumped off Moeen Ali to leave Australia at 60 for 4. It was then the duo of Maxwell and Marsh, which saw Australia out of initial slump. The pair registered 141-run stand for the fifth wicket to take Australia past 200-run mark.

Maxwell, then tried to accelerate and perished in doing so. He fell five runs short of what could have been his maiden ton. Marsh continued to play his shots, but was run-out while going for a risky second run in 44th over. Marsh, who scored 60, was sixth wicket to fell for Australia.

In between 44th and 46th over Australia lost some momentum, but James Faulkner’s breezy half-century off just 24 balls saw Australia post a defendable score on board. Faulkner’s knock of 50 included four 4s and four 6s.

For England, Stuart Broad picked three wickets while James Anderson scalped two.
