The 17th Incheon Asian Games, officially known as the XVII Asiad is the Pancontinental multi-sport event that is all set to kick start from September 19 – October 4, 2014. The 2014 Asian Games is scheduled to take place with 45 nations participating in Incheon with 439 events in 36 sports and disciplines set to feature in the Games. With Incheon, this will be third time South Korea will be hosting the Asian Games after Seoul in 1986 and Pusan in 2002. The fixtures of the Asian Games 2014 starts with the opening ceremony scheduled to take place on September 19, which is expected to be mix of Korean traditional culture with the modern technology. The closing ceremony will take place on October 4.

The 2014 Asian Games remains very special and close to India that were the first host of the Asian Games way back in 1951 as 17th Edition of Asian Games torch was lit at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium on August 9, 2014. This is for the first time the torch has been lit outside the host nation. The Asian Games 2014 is the next big thing for the athletes after the successful outing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. With the inclusion of new sporting events like archery, mixed relay triathlon, judo team events introduced for the first time in the 17th edition of Asian Games sees high medal hopes from the Indian contingent. India would be seeing the participation of 262 competitors in 11 sports – high medal hopes in events like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, shooting, tennis, archery, badminton, table tennis and squash.

In the 2010 Asian Games, India finished sixth in the medal table with their best ever performance bagging 64 medals including 14 gold at the Guangzhou. With India performing well at recently held Commonwealth Games, all eyes would be on the Indian athletes to better their previous best at the 17th Asiad. The Indian side have won in some unknown territories like athletics, their full strengths in form of the wrestlers, boxers and shooters and return of tennis and archery in Asian Games unlike CWG should motivate India to touch higher new heights.

The Asian Games have been dominated by China, who last topped the medal table with 416 total medals including 199 gold. 2014 Asian Games host nation South Korea had finished second with 232 medals including 76 gold. Japan formed the top three of the 2010 Asian Games with 216 total medals. For India, the challenge to topple them looks invincible but bettering their own records is highly possible.

The 17th Asian Games spread over the period of 16 days will start off with grand opening ceremony on 19th September, following which the medal events will take place from September 20 onwards at Incheon.
