Chile win their first ever major trophy!! All their penalties were taken expertly while Banega and Higuain faltered. Wonder what else Argentina could have done as they run the danger of being known as the nearly men of their generation. Credit to Chile, whose golden generation have taken them to such heights. Their football has been majestic and credit to Claudio Bravo, their magnificent captain who deserves all the glory.

7. Sanchez- Score!!! (Chile win 4-1) What a cheeky way to finish things off. The talisman steps up and plays a cheeky chip and the ball goes into the right corner and the crowd are in raptures. Red mist everywhere and Sanchez takes his shirt off. Tears of joy for Chile, despair for Argentina yet again after last year’s World Cup final loss.

6′- Banega -Miss- Tame penalty and Bravo jumps to the left and saves it.

5. Aranguiz- Score- Good penalty to the right corner.

4. Argentina- Higuain – Miss– Miles over the bar!

3. Chile- Vidal- Score – Low into the bottom corner and the ball just squeezes its way into the bottom corner.

2. Argentina – Messi – Messi Score goes straight as his Barca teammate Bravo goes to the far left. All square.

1. Chile – Abel Hernandez – Score Fantastic penalty to the right corner. No chance for Romero despite going the right way.

End of Extra Time

29′ Banega takes the free kick. Higuain takes a shot and the ball bounces back off the wall and that will be the last action in the last two hours and it is the penalty spot that will decide the outcome of the game.

28‘ There are long range efforts now as nothing concrete looks like working out. Aranguiz makes a cynical foul on Messi. Could have been a yellow card offence but it is just a free-kick.

26′ Messi loses the ball and Chile win a foul from 40 yards out. Surprisingly Hernandez has gone for goal with the free kick and Romero punches the ball away. Throw in and Chile have the ball.

25′ The passes are getting all the more tiresome. Lavezzi at the other end thinks he is fouled in the penalty box. There was nothing in it apart from blatant playacting from the Argentine winger.

24′ A shot from Aranguiz from 25 yards out but the ball is over the bar. Bravo thumps the ball to the other end and Vidal does well to work some space and tee up Aranguiz who takes the shot.

22′ Edge of the area and Otamendi clips Sanchez. Not even a freekick is given as there was clear contact from the Argentinian. The referee has got quite a few decisions wrong today and here is another one of them.

Great covering by Zaba on Sanchez to help keep Argentina in the Copa America final. https://t.co/l7BbIXfKQd

18′ Messi is being outsmarted by the resilient Chile defence time and again. Here again, Higuain passes the ball to the centre and Messi runs into the red wall. The ball goes to the other end Henriquez makes a good run on the byline. The ball goes out of play but there could have been possibilities had the ball been played a touch quicker.

17′ More muscle, little fizz here at Santiago. Defences are holding firm as the possibility of penalties is edging closer and closer.

2nd Half- Extra Time

15′ Nailbiting moment here from Argentina. Mascherano tries to clear the ball as Chile attempt a counter. The Barca midfielder completely misjudges it and the ball is straight to Sanchez on the right flank, who sprints straight on goal but blasts the ball over the bar. So close and lucky let off for Mascherano.

13′ More fouls here and Isla goes bumping into Lavezzi’s back and  Argentina get a free kick. Messi can work something out here.

11′ Chile work from the back but are finding Argentina increasingly hard to break down. Another rush of adrenalin from Vidal and he rams into Otamendi. Slight elbow there and words are exchanged between the pair.

9‘ Chile handball and Messi takes a free-kick. No card given. The ball is crossed in and nothing much comes off it. Lavezzi tries to work a cross in but no avail. Goal kick.

7′ Diaz makes his presence in the box. The ball finds its way in after Hernandez loses it. The defender spins and shoots but is miles off goal.

6′ Attacks are going nowhere as Chile construct a wave of attacks. Sanchez shows slick footwork again but the attacks are going nowhere.

4′ Chileans are making an attacking sub. Substitution – Manchester United’s loanee Angelo Henriques comes on for tournament’s top scorer Eduardo Vargas

3′ Rojo makes a powerful run through the middle but is stopped in his tracks. The ball goes out for a goal kick.

ET 2′  Chile starts things off and Beausejour makes his way through on the left flank but the cross can’t be delivered. There is a tussle for the ball between Banega and Isla. Banega rather immaturely sticks his left boot out and a yellow card is given.

Extra Time

90 +2  What drama in the last couple of minutes! Sanchez creates two good chances but Mascherano and his men hold firm. Argentina smuggle the ball and Messi starts the attack, skips past two defenders with consummate ease and delivers the pass to Lavezzi on the left flank. The ball is crossed into Higuain at the far post who can only watch his shot slam the side netting. End of the 90! Agonising

89′ Messi and Higuian try hard and it is cut out by the Chileans. Higuian keeps the ball in play on the left flank but is doubled up. Lavezzi gets into a good position but cannot get the ball. Messi ghosts in but is watched out.

88′ Messi races away on the right flank and is tripped. Free Kick from 40 yards out and Messi takes it but the ball does not have much swerve on it and Romero comes out and pouches the ball.

86‘ Banega gets the first bit of action in the game and Aranguiz makes a cynical foul on his opponent as he falls down. Yellow card for Araguiz and the Chilean is not even protesting.

85′ Lavezzi breaks free after being sent through on goal by Messi. Offside given.

6 – Until being substituted, Jorge Valdivia was the player with the most fouls won in the #CA2015 final. Provoker pic.twitter.com/NEHHeA3o9K

— OptaJavier (@OptaJavier) July 4, 2015

81′ Ball is chipped in into the box and the Sanchez comes close!!! The Arsenal hitman beats the offside trap and is free and spins and takes the volley. It is misdirected and the ball goes wide. Huge groan from the home crowd, as we learn had disgraceful elements too.

Members of Lionel Messi’s family were attacked by Chilean fans in the stands and had to be moved to a TV cabin instead… #ARG #Chile2015

— Ben Hayward (@bghayward) July 4, 2015

80′ Third and final change for Argentina. Rather bold from Martino. Pastore off, Ever Banega on

78′ Lavezzi- Pastore-Messi work a beautiful move but it is cut out as Argentina march their way into the territory.

77′ Chileans enjoy a very optimistic spell but can’t make much out of it. Vidal again on the forefront of it but Argentina’s defence hold on.

76′ Valdivia was rather unimpressed with him being substituted. Vidal makes a run into the territory and his shot is blocked from Demichellis and those two have a heated exchange.

74′ Subsititution – Rather absurd as Valdivia comes off, Matias Fernandez comes on. Aguero goes off for Argentina and supersub Higuain is on

72‘ Demichellis uses all his experience here. Isla beats Rojo from the byline but the Argentinian defender watches Vargas all the way through. The shot is rather tame hence.

Not much happening. Inevitable after that frantic first half. #CopaAmerica

— Barry Dunne (@BarryDunne1) July 4, 2015

69′ Vidal  now goes down and it is because he thunders into Demichells’s follow through. It is a painful one and it will take some recovery time.

68′ The game awaits the first goal. Tantalizing battle between the two sides and it has had all the ingredients from the build up.

67′ Argentina on the counter.  Aguero is making a powerful run but is cut out by Silva. Zabaleta takes a throw in but the referee is not impressed. Foul throw given.

65′ Ball swiftly moves to the other end. Valdivia has a lot of space and smashes a cutback into Vidal. The Chilean midfielder has to do an awful lot to control the ball and smash it goalwards. Zabaleta slides in.

64′ Messi to take the free kick. The ball hits Vidal in the wall and runs out for a corner. Dead ball taken by Lavezzi. The ball is sent into the area and Bravo dives to palm the ball away for another corner.

63′ The Argentinians win a free kick. Messi is tripped by Vidal and it is a good position for Argentina to capitalize from. Vidal is not impressed.

61′ Now it is Argentina on the right flank and the ball is crossed in from Zabaleta and the cross is rather below par. Aguero was making a run but it was nigh on impossible for Zabaleta’s Manchester City teammate.

59′ Argentina hogging possession and it is the left flank that is being targeted. The cross is attempted from Rojo and it is cut out for a corner from Isla. The corner comes in and there is massive grapple that is happening in the box. Another corner and nothing comes off it.

58′ It is Lavezzi on the left flank again, making a powerful run and the ball is crossed but Diaz does well to block it.

56′ Chile take a terrible free kick and the ball is cleared away. Argentina back in possession. Argentina win a corner. The spot kick is taken by Lavezzi and Rojo at the far post takes the header and the ball is cleared away.

55′ Yellow Card for Mascherano and it is rather unfairly given from the referee. The former Argentine defender is furious and is barking at the referee that the ball eluded his hand as he dived forward to chest the ball away.

Chile have not offered Messi as much space and time on the ball as Paraguay did in the semi #CopaAmerica #FinalCA2015 pic.twitter.com/YczpeIjnt9

51′ Chileans win another corner and Aranguiz is with the spot kick again. The ball is floated in and is cleared out narrowly at the near post. The ball is kicked out and Valdivia wins the ball back with all his grit in midfield. The ball is towards Isla  but is slightly overhit.

50′ Chileans yet again thunder down the right hand flank. Vidal frees Valdivia, who runs to the byline and a cross was there for the taking. Mascherano uses all his experience to kick the ball out for the first Chilean corner.

48′ There is a tussle in the Chilean half on the right flank. Aranguiz vs Pastore and the Argentinian wins a foul after being tripped behind.

47‘ The Chileans are setting the pace here and Vargas is yet again tripped and his clutching his back as he falls down.

46′ Chile come off the blocks strongly and the ball is crossed in by Isla and Vidal is in the territory and thunders the ball to the far post but it is straight to Romero’s hands.

2nd Half

45+1′ Pastore works his way into the box from the left flank. Classy footwork and is squared to his PSG teammate Lavezzi, who drills a shot straight at goal but the ball is straight to Bravo, who is well positioned to take control. That will be the last bit of action from the half.

45′ Tempers are flaring up here at the Chilean cauldron. Valdivia is livid as Rojo this time, thunders onto him. Then Messi tries to break free but is stopped in his tracks. Then Sanchez on the other end somehow manages to get a chip in from a crowded territory. The ball is straight into Romero’s hands.

44′ Messi is stopped in his tracks and it is a rather cynical tug on to the shirt. Referee doesn’t think it is worthy of a card.

42′ Another attack on the right hand side and Biglia this time is closed down well. Biglia fouls Valdivia, not for the first time in the game. The ball is floated in by Diaz and Sanchez throws himself at it. The ball is cleared.

40′ Messi concedes a free kick. The Argentine skipper was fouled initially by Diaz but the referee saw no infringement there but the foul on Valdivia stopped play.

39′ Chile start the attack from the back as the clock ticks towards the half way mark. Lot of wastefulness over the last few minutes as Argentina are now looking more cohesive than they started out.

37′ The corner is taken by Biglia and the angle is good from the right hand side. Nothing comes off it.

36‘ Lavezzi takes a corner and Aguero gets away from his marker and cuts the ball back on the volley into the danger area. A shot comes in and it is blocked away. The attack continues and Argentina win another corner.

35′ Argentina win a free kick. The ball is sent into the box by Messi and Medel clears the ball. Pastore is happy to see the ball off for a corner.

32′ Chile now get possession and Sanchez bursts into the territory in style. Vidal plays a ball through to him but Sanchez just cannot get past the maze of defenders to get his shot away. Gary Medel is cautioned at the other end after a rather cynical, dangerous foul on Lionel Messi.

31′ Got to feel for Di Maria as missed out last year’s World Cup final too. He sits on the sidelines, watching his teammates play. Valdivia tries to work an attack from the left but his cross is wayward.

29‘ Aranguiz plays a good ball into Vargas and it is a 2 vs 2 situation. Otamendi tries to shield the ball and while he dives during an impact, Vargas is slapped across the face with his boot.

28‘ Isla and Sanchez try to work a one-two into the box but it is cut out by Rojo. It is a big blow and a shame for Argentina. Angel Di Maria is substituted and Ezequiel Lavezzi comes on

25′ There is a stoppage in play as Di Maria pulls his hamstring. The winger is in fine form, skipping past Vidal and Beausejour and Valdivia finally takes the ball off him. Di Maria is struggling.

23′ Francisco Silva is handed out a yellow card. The defender pulls back his opponent’s shirt and is cautioned. Argentina waste a free kick and the ball goes to the other end. Chile get a free kick and Sergio Romero keeps it out. Punched away.

21′ Argentina win the ball back and build from the back.  They are moving the ball with more command and authority. The ball comes in from the left flank from Pastore. Messi tries to wade into the box through the middle but the Chileans crowd him out. The ball swiftly moves to the other end where Vargas is speeding in but the ball is blasted over the near post!

20′ Free Kick –  Barca vs Barca here and Messi takes a pin-point free-kick and Aguero meets the ball cleanly with his head but Bravo dives superbly to his left to palm the ball away. It was going in and it was truly fabulous goalkeeping.

18′ Argentina get a free-kick on the right flank and it is on the edge of the box. Beausejour with a crunching tackle on Zabaleta after Aguero does superbly to keep the attack going.

15′ Argentina get a good spell of possession here and it is Biglia, Pastore and Messi who are on the forefront of it. They try to work a triangle into the territory but the ball is well cut out by Diaz, who breaks the attack.

14′ Medel vs Aguero in the middle and the Chilean defender does well to see off his opponent’s threat. Lovely ball from Mascherano to set Aguero free though.

12‘ Deafening voice and high-intensity football. The final has been terrific so far. What a start. Aranguiz clatters into Di Maria, who is fouled but no card given as the Manchester United winger looks for one. Messi makes a dash into the territory and delivers a cross but is easily cut out.

10′ Chile are pressing high and here come the first clear cut chance of the game. Isla crosses the ball and is cleared awkwardly by Demichellis. Vidal is there for the rebound and catches the ball on the volley but Romero does well to palm the ball away. Throw in.

8′ What a chance that was for Valdivia! Argentina lose the ball and their defence is in tatters. The Chilean playmaker is in acres of space and delivers a poor pass to Vargas on the left. Vidal is livid as he was in space too for the cutback right at the edge of the box.

7′ Valdivia tries to make some space in the middle  but is fouled. Di Maria, at the other end runs through but plays another poor cross

5′ Now Argentina threaten down the middle. Pastore loses the ball but wins it back expertly in the middle and sets Messi free, Aguero makes a run down the middle but the Argentinian skipper’s through ball through the middle narrowly eludes the Manchester City striker.

4′ Messi has had only only one proper touch so far. Chile were comfortable in possession in the initial minutes of the game. Di Maria gets the ball on the left flank and his attempted cross is wayward

2′ We have started things off here Santiago. History and the odds are stacked against the home side. Isla is terrorising the Argentinians down the right flank and there is already action underway

Hello and welcome to the Live Updates of the Copa America 2015 final between Argentina and Chile. Since Gabriel Batistuta’s side led them to glory in 1993, Argentina have  come close but have fallen narrowly short of winning a major International tournament. They did come close in the recent past — in 2004 and 2007 — a penalty shootout  and a convincing 0-3 defeat against arch-rivals Brazil on both occasions. While Brazil are still licking their wounds and picking up the pieces, as they look for lost glory, Lionel Messi’s side have been solid on the International circuit over the last few years.

Alejandro Sabella forged a solid, hardworking and a balanced team and Gerardo Martino has largely benefited from when he was asked to take over the Albiceleste at the stroke of the end of the FIFA World Cup 2014, where Argentina lost in the dying moments of extra-time in the final. Not a lot has changed in terms of tactics and personnel but another Argentinian, Jorge Sampaoli, who manages Chile can come in the way of that. Chile have been a fluent, forward-thinking side since the days of Marcelo Bielsa and in front of their home fans, have a narrow edge over the Argentinians. They can certainly spoil Messi and co’s party. Can they clinch their maiden International title?
