A former Olympic and World champion, Abhinav Bindra is one of India’s biggest title hopes in the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he became the first and only individual gold medalist for India till date. Abhinav Bindra born on September 28, 1982 brought the golden glory for India since 1980, when the Men’s Field Hockey Team won the gold. He won a total of 33.3 million US dollars in cash by various governments and private bodies for his gold medal at Beijing.

Abhinav Bindra quest for reaching remarkable heights began quite early in life as at the age of 15, Bindra became the youngest participant in the Commonwealth Games 1998. Later on, in the 2000 Sydney Olympics he was the youngest Indian participant. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Bindra was given the honour of being the flag bearer for the Indian contingent.

Abhinav Bindra has won gold medal at the Commonwealth Games four times, but the top honour eludes him in the Asian Games. His best performance at Asiads came in 2010, where he won a silver medal.

He won the Arjuna Award in 2000 and followed it up with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India’s highest honour in sports the next year. He won six gold medals at various international meets in 2001. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan and in 2011, the Indian Territorial Army honoured him with the title of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel.

He has been in fine form coming into the tournament after winning a gold medal at Glasgow in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games. A lot would be expected from him as he aims to go one up at this Asian Games in Incheon.
