Controversial black Islamic flag removed from Tower Hamlet for similarity to ISIS

Tower Hamlet (London): A black Islamic flag which was fluttering at the entrance to the Will Crooks estate at Tower Hamlet has been taken down after Sister Christine Frost, a well-known community activist and the local Muslim community decided to remove the flag because it had similarity with the flag of Jihadi groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

However it also started a debate whether the flag was actually spreading hatred in the area or not. The flag was hoisted in a largely Muslim area following a Gaza solidarity protest. According to Frost, the black flag in question was very much similar to the flags of the ISIS group which has beheaded non-believers on its mission to create a caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

However many Bangladeshi residents of the area in London claimed that the black flag was just an emblem of solidarity with the people of Gaza and hoisted to show cross border unity between Muslims. The black flag had Arabic writing on it which meant, “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger.”
