After Delhi University, UGC targets Symbiosis; asks to shut down four-year courses

A new controversy has kick started between universities for autonomy. After Delhi University was asked to scrap its two year under graduate program before two months, some other universities have also been asked to do the same. Universities like Symbiosis and the Shiv Nadar University have been realized to be running the same courses for several years.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked Symbiosis to shut down its four-year programme which has been running for four years. The institution has been given now 15 days to bring the order in effect. However, the university is planning to protest against the order which has the capability of affecting the futures of 140 students.

Symbiosis Chancellor Dr S Mazumdar reacting on the issue said, “Universities should be allowed to be innovative and flexible, we will appeal to the UGC and the Human Resources Development Ministry to reconsider the decision.”
