Sonia Gandhi accuses BJP government of being anti-poor and anti-farmer at Kissan-Khet Majdoor rally

New Delhi, April 19: Accusing the BJP-led NDA government at the centre of being anti-poor and anti-farmer, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday said her party would continue raising its voice against the government’s “anti-people policies”. Addressing a huge Kissan-Khet Majdoor rally at Ramlila Maidan here, she said that the Modi government was not bothered about the poor and the farmers of the country.

“Where have the people gone, who used to say that no farmer would commit suicide (after they form the government at centre),” she asked saying that farmers and the labourers of the country were in trouble and the government was just not bothered. Talking about how the UPA government used to raise the procurement price of famers’ produce frequently, Gandhi said the Modi government has not done anything for them. “Only meagre increment has been given in the price of their produce,” she charged. The Congress president also raised the issue of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013 saying the BJP was also a part of it when it was being framed.

Now, they are changing it and it’s against the interest of the farmers, she said, adding that the Congress party would not allow it to happen. “We won’t let it happen,” she said. “I want to ask why these changes? We have all provision in it…they want to acquire your land whether you want to sell it or not,” the Congress leader charged.

Gandhi also accused the Modi government of making “hollow promises” to the public. “The people have understood that you made hollow promises to them,” she said.

The Congress president also charged the central government with not doing anything to save the lives of farmers reeling under debt. “Farmers are under debt, committing suicide and nothing is being done,” she said.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi who returned last week after leave of absence of nearly two months, addressed the rally which is being seen as a revival attempt by the Congress after its massive defeat in the general election last year.
