Ecuador Vs Honduras, Group E - Live Score

SATURDAY 21ST JUNE - 3:30AM (LOCAL) | ARENA DA BAIXADA, CURITIBA

COMPLETED

Honduras Ecuador

Honduras: Making their third appearance in the World Cup (second time in a row), Honduras will try to take their oppurtunity to go beyond the group stage. If they manage to do so, it would be the first time they qualify for the Round of 16. Honduras will count on Wilson Palacios, Carlo Costly and Jerry Bengtson to make history.

Ecuador: Ecuador is seen as a surprise name in the World Cup stage but it looks like the South-American team has drawn inspiration from the tragic death of their player Christian Benítez. It is seen as a daunting task for Reinaldo Rueda’s side to qualify for the next round in their only fourth World Cup appearance. But one would expect Captain Antonio Valencia to inspire his side to proceed to a better finish this time around.

Commentary

(168 Mins)

There will be four minutes of stoppage time.

(166 Mins)

Ecuador are on the back foot now. After scoring their second, theyve invited the opposition forward and are now paying the price for it.

(165 Mins)

They nearly get it! Maynor Figueroa finds himself in space 25 metres from goal, and launches a fizzing shot which just clears Dominguezs crossbar. Millimetres away.

(164 Mins)

There are five minutes remaining. Can Honduras find an equaliser?

(163 Mins)

Changes aplenty in Curitiba. Minda is exchanged for Carlos Gruezo.

(162 Mins)

Honduras make their final substitution of the match Marvin Chavez has come on in place of Oscar Garcia.

(161 Mins)

Felipe Caicedos game is over, he is replaced by Edison Mendez.

(159 Mins)

Jefferson Montero earns a yellow card. Carlo Costly pushes him in the back, and the Ecuadorian reacts by squaring up to his perpetrator.

(157 Mins)

The men in white have another shot on goal. Carlo Costly lays the ball off for Roger Espinoza, but he blazes his effort over the bar. That was some clever play by Costly: hes been the Hondurans stand-out player this evening.

(154 Mins)

Honduras are pressing for an equaliser. They have a two free-kicks in the space of a minute, but neither penetrate the Ecuadorian box.

(152 Mins)

Enner Valencia is the latest player to be booked, this time for kicking the ball away after teammate Christian Noboa had conceded a foul. He may be on a hat-trick, but theres no excuse for that.

(150 Mins)

Honduras make another change. Marvin Chavez comes on to replace Luis Garrido.

(149 Mins)

On the balance of play, Ecuador just about deserve their lead. Will they go in search of a third, or sit back and defend their lead?

(147 Mins)

Honduras have around 25 minutes to save their World Cup campaign. A defeat wont knock them out tonight, although theyll be three points behind Ecuador and Switzerland as things stand.

(144 Mins)

Ecuador lead! Walter Ayovi curls a pinpoint free-kick into the box from the left, and Enner Valencia is on hand to head the ball past the despairing Noel Valladares. That goal was all about the cross. Superb delivery.

(143 Mins)

Honduras 1-2 Ecuador (Enner Valencia)

(141 Mins)

Jerry Bengston has the ball in the back of the net for Honduras once more, but again the goal is correctly ruled out as his teammate Carlo Costly was offside in the build-up. Fewer protests from the Hondurans this time round.

(138 Mins)

Ecuador appeal for a penalty as Jerry Bengtson is clipped by Frickson Erazo in the box. The Ecuador striker did well to stay on his feet as he moved in on goal, and can probably consider himself unfortunate not to be awarded a spot-kick. The referee awards Ecuador a corner instead.

(136 Mins)

Antonia Valencia is the first Ecuadorian to be booked. He brings down Oscar Garcia as the Honduran spins past him. A needless foul only metres inside Ecuadors half.

(132 Mins)

Jefferson Montero is another man putting in an impressive performance this evening. He charges down the left, eventually earning a corner having outpaced the Honduran back line. The cross is whipped in, but it fails to meet an Ecuadorian head. Chance gone.

(130 Mins)

Its a calmer start to the second half. Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez is in the stands this evening. As if the players werent under enough pressure already...

(127 Mins)

Honduras made a change at half-time. Juan Carlos Garcia has come on to replace Emilio Izaguirre in defence. Were not sure if thats a tactical move by Luis Suarez, or a reaction to an injury.

(125 Mins)

A positive start for Honduras. Brayan Beckeles sends the ball towards the top corner, but Dominguez is equal to the shot. Some nice build-up play in that move.

(124 Mins)

Were back underway in Curitiba.

(122 Mins)

The fans have been fantastic this evening inside Arena da Baixada. The Ecuadorians have been especially noisy in the first 45 minutes.

(118 Mins)

Honduras, to their credit, had 53% of the possession in that half. Its a vast improvement from their opening game, when they had just 29.2% of the ball over the course of 90 minutes: the lowest percentage posted by any side in Brazil.

(116 Mins)

Enner Valencia, the games other goalscorer, is in the form of his life for Ecuador. He has scored in each of his last six games for his country. Unstoppable.

(112 Mins)

The Honduran fans will have something to celebrate after this match, regardless of the result. Carlo Costlys goal was his nations first in the World Cup since 1982. Prior to tonight, Honduras had failed to score in their previous five games in this tournament.

(111 Mins)

HALF-TIME - Honduras 1-1 Ecuador

(108 Mins)

Drama at the end of the half! Honduras have the ball in the net, but the linesman has ruled it out for offside. Replays show that Jerry Bengtson was not only offside when he struck the ball, but that it also went in off his arm. That hasnt stopped the Hondurans gathering round referee Benjamin Williams to protest, though.

(107 Mins)

Chance for Honduras. Victor Bernardez thumps a free-kick from 30 metres out, but its straight at Alexander Dominguez. Beautifully struck, at least.

(106 Mins)

There will be two minutes of time added on at the end of the first half.

(104 Mins)

Play has stopped while the physios attend to goalscorer Carlo Costly. He went down in a tussle with the ball, but is already back on his feet and ready to rejoin the game.

(101 Mins)

Ecuador cant afford another defeat here this evening. With France looking unbeatable having scored eights goals in their opening two games, the South Americans need to get maximum points from this fixture. Enner Valencia has rescued what briefly looked like a dying campaign.

(99 Mins)

Theres some concern for Juan Carlos Paredes, who is down after falling awkwardly on top of a Honduran heel. Hes gone off the field for more treatment, but it looks as though hell be able to continue.

(96 Mins)

Honduras barely had time to celebrate their sides first World Cup goal in 32 years before Ecuador pegged them back. Now the South Americans have the momentum.

(95 Mins)

Its 1-1! A tame shot finds its way through the legs of a Honduran defender, and Enner Valencia sneaks in at the back post to poke the ball goalwards and beyond Valladares. Its all square!

(94 Mins)

Honduras 1-1 Ecuador (Enner Valencia)

(92 Mins)

Scrap what I just said, Honduras lead! A long ball is played forward and it drops kindly for Carlo Costly, whose first touch puts him through on goal. The Honduran forward steadies himself before sweeping the ball past Dominguez and into the net. Terrific finish.

(91 Mins)

Honduras 1-0 Ecuador (Carlo Costly)

(89 Mins)

Alexander Dominguez hasnt had a save to make in the opening half hour. Honduras have had plenty of possession in Ecuadors half, but are yet to convert that into shots on target.

(86 Mins)

Another opportunity wasted for Ecuador. Tilson Oswaldo Minda carries the ball forward, and looks to play in the unmarked Caicedo on the edge of the box. His pass is careless though, and Honduras clear. They need to be sharper in the final third if theyre going to break the deadlock...

(83 Mins)

Ecuador are beginning to stamp their authority on the game. They earn a couple of corners in quick succession, but fail to make anything from them. Felipe Caicedo in particular has given the Honduran defence plenty to think about in the first 25 minutes.

(81 Mins)

We have now though! A long ball is launched forward from Ecuadors back four, and it falls to Enner Valencia in front of goal. Hes one-on-one with the keeper having been played onside by Izaguirre, but can only scoop a shot wide of Valladares left post. It should be 1-0.

(79 Mins)

Few chances to talk about so far. The opening exchanges have been very physical and energetic, as expected, but were yet to see anything clear-cut.

(78 Mins)

Despite their sides recent results, both sets of fans are making their fair share of noise in Curitiba this evening. Top effort.

(74 Mins)

Neither side has come into this game with any recognisable form: both teams have only registered one win in their last eight matches. It is also the first time these two sides have met each other competitively. They have played 13 friendlies before today, with Honduras winning two games and Ecuador three.

(71 Mins)

Its a surprisingly open match at the moment. Honduras are nowhere near as compact as they were against France, and Ecuador are playing with the intensity of a side that knows it has to win tonight.

(68 Mins)

First booking of the game. Victor Bernardez brings down Jefferson Montero as he steams forward, and thats an easy decision for the referee. The resulting free-kick is blocked by the wall, with Honduras eventually earning a goal-kick.

(65 Mins)

Cracking start to the match. Caicedo and Enner Valencia combine up front for Ecuador, forcing some last-ditch defending from the Honduran centre backs. The Central American side break up the other end of the pitch, and a dangerous cross from Oscar Garcia nearly makes its way past Noel Valladares.

(62 Mins)

Not five seconds into the game, and Honduras commit their first foul. Enner Valencia cant even make it out of the centre circle before being brought down by a Honduran leg. You get the feeling that could be a sign of things to come...

(61 Mins)

Ecuador, playing in yellow shirts and blue shorts, get things underway. Honduras are in their usual all-white strip.

(59 Mins)

Some very generous comments from both coaches, there. Lets hope that respect finds its way onto the pitch tonight.

(59 Mins)

Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez was in charge of Ecuador between 2004 and 2007. Speaking before the game, he said: "It is a different side to mine now, they have got a lot of new players, which is an indication in itself of how much they have progressed. I think they play better football now, and I like the team a lot more than I did when I was in charge."

(58 Mins)

We’re in the strange position this evening where both coaches have at some point managed their opposition. Ecuador boss Reinaldo Rueda oversaw the Honduran side between 2006 and 2010. He said: "I love the people of Honduras very much and the love I have for them will always be there, even though we have a very intense 90 minutes ahead of us."

(57 Mins)

Ecuador Starting XI: Dominguez, Guagua, Erazo, Paredes, Noboa, Montero, Ayovi, Caicedo, E. Valencia, Minda, A. Valencia.

(56 Mins)

Honduras Starting XI: Valladares, Figueroa, Bernardez, Izaguirre, Bengston, Costly, Garcia, Espinoza, Garrido, Claros, Beckeles.

(56 Mins)

Honduras also began the tournament with a loss, this time with a more resounding 3-0 defeat at the hands of France. Wilson Palacios was sent off in that game; he is serving his suspension this evening and won’t feature for the Hondurans.

(53 Mins)

Ecuador got their campaign off to a disappointing start last weekend, conceding a goal in the last minute against Switzerland to lose 2-1. The defeat was especially painful after the Swiss side got their winner seconds after Ecuador had nearly gone ahead themselves.

(53 Mins)

In the earlier kick-off France crushed Switzerland 5-2, all but guaranteeing their place in the knockout round.
