Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was formed on May 25, 1999, when Sharad Pawar, PA Sangma and Tariq Anwar protested against the decision to make the Italian-born Sonia Gandhi the INC leader, the NCP is based mainly in Maharashtra. When this party was formed, it also absorbed the Congress (Socialist) Party. NCP is also known as the Rastravadi Congress party, and its headquarters are located in Delhi. It is a part of the UPA. Sharad Pawar, who is the Minister for Agriculture, still leads the party, and is known for the controversial statements he makes frequently, often receiving flak from other parties for them.
