Narendra Modi has been re-elected three times as the Chief Minister of Gujarat since 2001. He has been the president of BJP and is a senior leader. He was in charge of the state administration when Godhra riots happened in Gujarat in 2002, and was accused for being involved in the riots. Recently, the Supreme Court of India acquitted him from the case. Modi was a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and was assigned to BJP in 1985. After the violence, some of the opposition leaders demanded his resignation, but in 2002 BJP won 127 out of 182 member assemblies.
